There is a Legend of the “Guessing Game”

1293 views. 2011-12-24 14:04 |

Even the guessing game has a legend? It sounds impossible. When we talk about a legend or story, it often refers to one thing or a series of thing. But there is really a legend of the “guessing game”. In fact, not just the guessing game has a legend but also the idioms. Some of them are really very interesting.

The legend of the guessing game: It is said that more than 2000 years ago, the guessing game came into being and gradually turned into lantern riddles. At the early age there was a person who called Mr.Hu by the villagers. He is very rich and do badly to the villagers, thus people all called him “smiling tiger” (It refers to people with kindly face and cruel heart). When the “smiling tiger” saw the people who wear proper and expensive clothes he looks like the tiger that stroking his beard and do what he can do to fawn on them. But instead when he saw the people who wear poor and cheap clothes he looks like the hungry wolf and want to make money from them.

That year the Spring Festival is just around the corner and there came 2 people to the “smiling tiger’s house”. They are called Cai Li and Shao Wang separately. Mr. Liu wore luxury clothes and Mr. Wang wore poor clothes, The servant hurried on to report it to the “smiling tiger” and the “smiling tiger” wore smile all over his face to welcome Mr. Li, then Mr. Li said that he want to borrow 10 ponds and the “smiling tiger” gave it to him quickly and then Mr. Li went away without saying anything. Before the “smiling tiger” could make a reaction to this, Mr. Wang came in and said “could you lend some money to me, my lord”? But just seeing his poor clothes the “smiling tiger” got angry and said “get far away from here as soon as possible”. Unfortunately Mr. Wang was thrown out of the gate before Mr. Wang could make a defense for himself.

On his way home, the more he thought of this matter the angrier Mr. Wang got, suddenly he came up with an idea and decided to make fun of the “smiling tiger”.

In the blink of an eye, the Spring Festival had passed and the Lantern Festival was about to coming. All the people were busy with their lanterns and with no exception; Mr. Wang was also very busty. Finally, the days came and all the people hung their lanterns in front of their house and Mr. Wang also brought a lantern which was very big and beautiful to the street. What makes his special is that there is a poem on the lantern. Mr. Wang came to the smiling tiger’s house with his lantern and many people were attracted to look at his lateen. At the same time the “smiling tiger” was watching the lantern, seeing this, he squeezed into the crowd. He found there were four lines in the poem but he can not read them out totally, then he ordered the accountant to read them out for him. The accountant read them out loudly with his head shaking from side to side. The poem was as follows: your pointy-headed and slimy-body figure, if weighted, too light. The eye is located at the ass position and just judge people by their clothes instead of people themselves.

The smiling tigerwas angry to hear that and shouted loudly “How dare you cursing me” and ordered the servant to rob the lantern. Mr. Wang put up the lantern hurriedly and said “I was not cursing you”. The “smiling tiger” said angrily, “If not, then what did you write on the lantern”? Mr. Wang read the poem once again. After hearing what Mr. Wang just read, the “smiling tiger” said if you did not curse me then who were you cursing? Then Mr. Wang said “uh, my lord, you are too suspicious about this, in fact, my poem is just a riddle and it refers to the needle, do you think so?” The smiling tiger thought for a while and said “that it is” and went away with no further words. All the crowed heard this and laughed happily.

Later, this matter spread broadly. On the second lantern festival, many people wrote the riddles on the lantern and let the visitors guess the answer. Thus, the guessing game came into being. From then on people usually hold some guessing games on lantern festival and it came down to us as a custom till today.

Do you think the story is interesting? The people who lived more than 2000 year ago began to playing this game and we modern people are still playing this game. But with the development of the society, guessing lantern games is not just a simple game now. It turned gradually into guessing the awards, if you guess it out then the award is belongs to you.
