whether internet is a blessing or a cures

663 views. 2009-5-16 09:25 |

Nowadays, we are living in a society with rapid development of social economics and advanced technology. Tremendous inventions are being built nearly every second, among them, perhaps the most influential one is the internet. However, the world’s first internet can be traced back to 1960s, when the America DOD( Department of Defense) built the rudimentary internet t meet the need to security exchange the information between different departments during the Cold War. Lately, nearly half a century later, even ordinary people can share the internet freely, enjoying themselves in the computer games, chatting with friends or strangers, working and sharing data and information. Since the great significance of the internet has played on people’s lives, the controversy about whether it’s a blessing or a cures have never ceased an end. Some may argue that those useful information the internet has brought to us benefit us enormously while those who against insist the internet had caused us a large number of trouble which can be avoided easily as usual and waste a lot of time. As far as I am concerned, the internet is a double-edged sword, the effect of internet depends mainly on how you use it.

To begin with, the main reason to support my inclination is that the internet provides us large number of information, saving us tons of time. For instance, with the computer and internet access, people can use online dictionaries or encyclopedias and learn valuable information in a cheaper, faster and more interesting way. The traditional paper-based dictionaries or encyclopedias have several major drawbacks: they are expensive, clumsy and inconvenient to use. These days, an English-Chinese dictionaries can easily sell for 50 or even 100 yuan, a small fortune for college students, and the latest version of the Britannica Encyclopedia, with 15 volumes, is priced art over 1,000 pounds. With the emergence f online dictionaries and encyclopedias, things have changed. Anyone, provides s/he has a computer and internet access, can log on to the website of Microsoft Encarta or Webster Dictionary search for information in for FREE!

In addition, to further clarify my point of view, I’ll add another important piece of evidence to support it/ an online encyclopedia or dictionaries is more convenient to use. Users do not have to spend several minutes flipping through pages. All they need to do is to type in a keyword, and, in less than a second, all the relevant information will come up.

However, those against do make sense from some perspectives, forcing us to make a judgment and think deeply. Due to tremendous numbers of web pages on the internet, even with the help of search engines, a search may find millions of pages. As a result, finding the useful information can be a burdensome and time-consuming task. What’s more, virus may destroy your secrets. A computer virus is a malicious computer program that can have negative, even disastrous impacts, on data and software. Virus can change or delete files, steal important information (credit card numbers and passports, ID numbers, private information), take up computer memory, or even result in system crashes.

All in all, from what has been discussed mentioned above, we may safely get to the conclusion that the internet is both a blessing and a cures mainly depends on how we use it. It may save us time while at the same time become time-consuming. It could securely exchange information from person to person while at the same time could expose our secrets easily. Since the development of modern technology, especially internet technology cannot be affected or slow down, it’s better solution for us to come up an idea to avoid its negative impacts, benefiting us in a more effective way.

I have to say I appreciate your graceful words and remarkable English writing ability. I wanna learn from you~
I'm for the internet, but I can see the negative effect as you do. However, I want to talk about your first opinion that may be not true. The information in the internet is not so free as you see, especially in the western countries. If you want to search for something, in most situations you have to pay some money, not free. But in China, you can get most information for free which is not allowed outside.
Anyway, the internet does benefit us a lot no matter in work or in life~

It‘s really a much discussed topic. Whether it turns out to be a bleesing or curse mostly depends on the way we use it.
