Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte (Book Report)

Jane Eyre ranks as one of the greatest and most perennially popular works of English fiction. Although the poor but plucky heroine is outwardly of plain appearance, she possesses an indomitable spirit, a sharp wit and great courage. She is forced to battle against the exigencies of a cruel guardian, a harsh employer and a rigid social order. All of which circumscribe her life and position when she becomes governess to the daughter of the mysterious, sardonic and attractive Mr Rochester.

When readers try to appreciate this work, they may be moved by Jane’s characters, such as her independence and amazing charms. She has said many famous conversations and they all give me indications. I still remember two of her conversations.

The first one is “Do you think, because I’m small and poor and plain, that I have no soul and no heart? Well, you’re wrong! I have as much soul and heart as you. It is my spirit that speaks to your spirit! We are equal in the sight of God!” We can see from this part, Jane seeks for an independent character and the metal equality of men and women. Although she has experienced misfortunes, she remains to love her life and be positive to her future. In order to realize her belief of love, a kind of equal and pure love, she would rather refuse Mr Rochester’s proposal. The life of her is not very ferocious but full of peace and serene.

The second one is that she has said “The real happiness, is the beautiful spiritual world and the noble and pure heart.”Her behavior and belief reflect huge power and also purify several generation’s souls. She judges her value and emotion personally so as to be a firm and independent woman. Charlotte Bronte has created an unprecedented female figure. Jane Eyre makes a wakeful sound of females which belongs to a consciousness of equality, idependence, integrity and freedom.

Charlotte Bronte tells us an ideal pattern of love: the value of people is the result of love and dignity. Charlotte is a gentle and pure girl who wants to persue beautiful things. She is lacked of love so that she feels herself inferior and gradually becomes self- respect. The character she made is also a plain and small girl like her, and also she owns the strong willing of self-esteem. She animates to seek for a bright and satisfied life. And the main character, Jane, is the reflection of her dream and imagination.

In her writing style, Charlotte makes it unique. She uses the point of first person to make this work more succinct and vivid so that her works can appeal to readers and also relate to the social reality. At the same time, the novel reflects traditional characteristics of European romantic literature. The writer naturally uses different writing techniques of dream, delusion, premonition, symbolization and metaphor to make the novel more indistinct and dramatic. Through the description of Jane’s misfortunes of childhood, the ruthless of charity school and the rough process of persuing true love, we can understand more about Jane and her characters.

The novel indicates us that as human beings, we need to live with our love and dignity. This ending provides the character with such a kind of life. Although I feel the ending is too perfect, I still respect the author’s ideal pattern of love. In our society, many people become crazy about money and status. They prefer richness to poverty as well as prefer dislikeness to love. Several people can give up what she owns like Jane just for her true love and magnificent personalities. What Jane Eyre shows for us is a kind of purity and innocence. It is an emotion of dedication and happiness.

In conclusion, Jane Eyre has influenced several generations. The writing style of Charlotte Bronte has also influenced the writing styles of America and England. As a result, her novels are considered as classical novels of modern females.
