Of Assisted Suicide

794 views. 2009-7-10 18:41 |

As I have done a research on assisted suicide, I’d like to use simple English to express my opinion on it.

According to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, the definition of assisted suicide is:” the process by which an individual, who may otherwise be incapable, is provided with the means (drugs or equipment) to commit suicide.” Assisted suicide is also called aid in dying or death with dignity. It usually happens on someone who is suffering from an incurable illness or chronic intense pain.

The parents of a 23-year-old Daniel James helped him to travel to Switzerland to die last       year after he was paralyzed in a rugby accident. This kind of event is not rare to seen nowadays. In this course, what the parents did is called assisted suicide. But why they had to fly abroad to help their son to die, because Switzerland has the most liberal legal framework on assisted dying. It allows suicide to be assisted by a non-doctor, as long as that it is not done for profit, while assisted suicide is forbidden in most countries in the world. And that is what I’m arguing- Individuals should have the right to make their own decisions about the course of dying by way of assisted suicide.

First, from ethical and moral aspect, no one wants to be in pain or see their loved ones in pain. To make it clearer, people are afraid of loss of incapacity. No one should have to endure terminal suffering that is incurable and unbearable. When the burdens of life outweigh the benefits, the dying person should be able to ask for and receive help in assisted suicide. If one lives painfully in the world, he of course has the right to choose to die. Many family members of these dying persons are in favor of their decisions of death though the law in that country may not allow this. In this case, patients may fly to another country where assisted suicide is permitted with family members. Above suggests that it is an action out of love rather than overlook of human right. The law may be “indifferent” to some degree; the government may be too just; it is only the family members who love the patients most that will support their decision to die. In addition, assisted suicide can preserve dignity of one person. Far from euthanasia, which means forcing on a person against his will, incurably ill persons have the right to choose when, where and how they die, so that they can preserve their dignity, honor and respect. Human life should be regarded as sacred, however, it is only when one is in joy and happiness state that this can be true. For those who have had years of suffering from an incurable and fatal disease which usually entails a slow and painful death, they should be allowed by law to commit assisted suicide if they would like to. This is basic human rights. And it will surely produce more good than harm to the patient as well as their family members.

Second, it is high time people looked back on history. The ancient Scythians believed that suicide was a great honor when individuals became woo old for their nomadic of life, thereby sparing the younger members of the tribe the burden of carrying them. Some Greek philosophers also argued that suicide would be acceptable under exceptional circumstances. For example, Plato, held  the belief that,” in general, suicide was cowardly and unjust, but it would be ethically accepted if a person had an eternal and incurable disease, had committed a disgraceful action, or had lost control of his actions due to grief or suffering.”

In conclusion, death is a question everyone must be faced with. The controversial is whether to die naturally or ahead of time. It depends. Everyone wants to die in be with offspring surrounding, and close his eyes peacefully with a happy smile on face, which is a typical scene in a movie. However, the real world is more crucial-not everyone is lucky to die naturally. Some are suffering from incurable illness every minute; some are disabled with indignity to live in the world. In these cases, why shall people keep curing them? To save a man’s life against his will, is the same thing as to kill him. When thinking about this, try to put yourself in their shoes. Death is just an action, no difference from eating, drinking or running. If the issue of assisted suicide is seen in this way, it may be much easier to accept it. Everyone has the right to live in the world, so do they have the equal right to choose to die.

However, people all live in societies with strict laws, which forbid them to do something they want to. If laws are existing only to be against most people’s will, why should they be made? In many cases, the terminally ill people want to die with the help of their family members or friends, but in the fear that their family members or friends will be prosecuted because of “killing others”. In other cases, the terminally ill people have to fly to places where assisted suicides are legal. It’s ironic that a person wants to die but is unable to. The law should serve its people, which is the basis of making laws.

In order to reliever the pain of the terminally ill people as well as the grief of their family members and friends, in order to have the human right to determine one’s own life,. It is strongly recommended that governments should think the issue of assisted suicide carefully and make it legal!

well, i took part in a TV program in CCTV 12 the day before yesterday, concerning the accident happened in Nanjing( i guess you know). the drunken driver killed 5 people. we disscussed how to reduce such kind of tragedy.
some people say the one who persuade hin to drink or sell alcohol to him should shoulder the responsibility of assisted suicide.
but i think it is ridiculous.
