yuanlai's is great advice.  Another helpful mechanism is to learn the synonyms *in context* (in a sentence that makes their meaning obvious) rather than as separate words.  This will make it much easier to recall the difference between them.  Asking a native English speaker when you forget is also really good, but of course there isn't always one around... so come back to the forum!
