The language which I want to learn is Changzhou dialect. This local dialect is very different from Mandarin. So I don't think it is a dialect of Chinese, because the people who speak Mandarin cannot communicate with the people who speak this dialect. The main reason why this language is called dialect that because of politics. That reminds me of one of my favorite quotes of all time:" A language is a dialect with an army and navy". Moreover, Changzhou language is not isolated. It is very similar from Shanghainese, Suzhou language, etc. All of those languages are called Wu Chinese. Now I am living in Changzhou. I have a lot of chances to access Changzhou language that the local residents are usually speaking it in their daily life. But the young people especially the student someone like me is rarely speak any dialect of Chinese. I think the dialect represents the diversity of the Chinese culture. Many customs and tradition are contained in the language. A kind of culture disappeared easily but recreate it hardly.
