How to cultivate a person’s courage?

I seldom do something out of emotion, and I shall not undertake a task readily without having sufficient time to make fully prepared. That is to say, I am a prudent person who dare not go on an adventure. Such a character discouraged my self-improvement and a lot of opportunities waved goodbye to me.
When a God-given opportunity is coming, I also want to grab hold of it. However, it ultimately slipped through my fingers due to a lot of worries and misgivings from me, and I would regret over the loss of it. I have also tried many a time to eliminate my shilly-shally when facing a choice, but my efforts proved useless.
Courage and decisiveness are what I am lacking of, especially the courage. Sometimes, I knew clearly what actions I should take in front of a problem, I just failed to summon all my courage to put them into practice, which extremely disappoints me. I used to pray to God repeatedly to bless me with the courage I need, yet I am still a timid person. Is it really difficult to cultivate a person’s courage? I don’t believe so, but it seems to be not that easy.What do you think?

- Thank you for all your comments and encouragement, but my problem is I don't know how to response when facing sudden events, even the "event" maybe a good thing to me.

- Obviously you have realized your lacking of courage, keep it in your mind. Sooner or later you will step forward to do something bravely, and once you cross the line it will be easy for you have courage to face things. In my courage, a shy classmate who dare not to say anything in front of more than 10 people finally become very confident to do compere things due to a lecture about history for our whole class. So maybe you can push yourself to do one thing you think need courage to take the first step.
