Is Chinese education really better?

Hot 4653 views. 2015-8-20 10:58 | education, Chinese, better, really

Recently, the BBC has produced a documentary "Are Our Kids Tough Enough, Chinese School". Five Chinese teachers who are firm supporters of Chinese education were invited to a famous British shcool to participate in an experiment, that is, to test which education is better by teaching 50 British students with complete Chinese education for a month. The result would be announced after the final examination. Which education is better? Chinese education or British education?
At last, Chinese education won. However, on the surface, Chinese education has defeated the British education, but it cannot prove the former is better than th latter. The president of this British school said that they did have to learn something from the Chinese education, for example, learn how to respect the teachers and value the education, but it's not acceptable to let the children study 15-16 hours a day, as that's not the childhood.  In this documentary, a British girl, who is a cum laude in Latin, impressed me greatly. She tried her best to excel in every courses, but she failed in the PE class, as she couldn't pass the test of throwing medicine ball. The girl was so sad that she couldn't help crying. In Britain, a student can choose the sports items he/she is good at, well, in China, PE education is a required course and it has several fixed items which will be assessed in the final examination.  From my point of view, as to this point, the Chinese education should be reformed, English course and PE course shouldn't be set as compulsory educational courses.
All in all, each education has its advantages and disadvantages, and what we should do is to take full advantages and abandon or modify those disadvantages.

The fundamental difference is that the British education system is focused on overall knowledge, while the Chinese system is based on marks or grades. Chinese students are more hardworking and attentive. I believe both system has it's own advantages, so the best thing to do is to learn from each other for mutual benefit.

I think it is very hard to compare those education systems because the culture difference determines how the system runs. If we want to mix them together for making it better, here I have some suggestions for you. You may ask your Minister of Education to adopt it as part of the education reform.

Firstly, in primary school, 80% use with Chinese teaching method and 20% in British’s. Because the curriculums of primary school are fundamental, so students must learn it well and pass the exams. To do these, the Chinese method is far better than the British one.

Secondly, take 50% of each side. Because in high school study, students need to start opening their minds in order to absorb the variety knowledge and develop their own interest towards the future careers. Therefor the half of British open mind learning method and the half of Chinese hard learning will make them perfect.

Finally at university study, the best way is opposite to the primary. Because the world university ranking has told us that the British universities are far more advanced than Chinese.

Please don’t be too serious. I just write the above for fun.

I also saw some comments from the producer of this documentary. They believe that one of the differences between the two educational systems is that British pupils are used to being able to ask questions of the teachers, as they expect their views to be considered with respect, while the Chinese pupils  are more used to taking notes and concentrating on the lecturing of the teachers, as they are accustomed to reviewing what they have learned and doing their homework according to the notes they have taken at daytime. I also think asking questions in the classroom is very important, as questions can urge people to think. Note-taking without questions can only produce those with high scores and low abilities. More independent thinking will motivate a student to solve the problems by themselves. In short, note-taking and asking questions should be combined in the classroom. Just as you say, the two educational systems should learn from each other.

Totally agree with your views. Actually the educational standards China are improving. The literacy rate in China is quite high and has the most English speaking population in Asia.

I agree with that each education has its advantages and disadvantages. Now, we can choose one way for our children. Such as Chinese education, You should send your children to go chinese school and accept chinese culture, the thinking of Chinese way, especially  the method of interaction with others. If you choose British education, you'd better send your children to Britain and live with British.

Yes, China and Britain are two countries with different social cultures, so, education needs to be established on their national conditions.
