The Temple City

523 views. 2013-1-18 17:19 |Individual Classification:General

So, I promise not to write three blogs every week, this week was especially busy...
Angkor Wat- which means temple city in English- is one of the seven ancient human wonders (that just means it is something that some really old dead guy built with slaves =).  It is really big.  We left the hotel around 6 to beat the hordes of tourists that get there at normal sunlit hours when human beings are awake, and still managed to find a few hundred tourists in front of us.  Apparently, some people spend an entire week exploring the ruins.   No doubt there is a lot of cool stuff, but I don't think I could find a week's worth of stuff without a very long winded guide.   Thousands of Apsaras- topless Hindu angels- are embedded throughout the main temple.  They, along with Budhas, encompass the majority of the carvings in Angkor Wat.  There are also ancient histories and theologies of the Hindu gods- primarily focusing on the naga serpent, but including others- such as Hanuman the monkey king, Rama an avatar of Vishnu, and countless peons fighting in gory wars.  Outside the main temple there were other giant ruins to climb in and see elephants (REAL and carved), more Budhas, and CARVED DINOSAURS.  Keep in mind this was built a mere 800 or so years ago!  Super cool.  The walking and tuktuk-ing (which, if you haven't guessed by now, is a primary form of transportation) from temple to temple was a little boring, but the numerous xylophone bands along the paths playing music for us made it nice.  Now, I know what your thinking- xylophone band?
Stop telling tall tails,
we aren't reading a Doctor Suess book,
your blog really fails.
But I'm telling the truth!
And they were crippled to boot.
They are minefield survivors,
who instead of begging,
create xylophone choirs
(OK I'll stop rhyming).  It was really cool.  We all also bought easily a million table clothes, scarves, T-shirts, and paintings (all hand crafted and expertly made so I'm told).  It was super fun because we were all competing to see who could land the best deal bartering with the local saleswomen.  All in all a super fun couple days.
