Is having a son better than having a daughter? In the countryside, there are many families keeping on giving birth to babies until having a boy. They think man is the pillar of the family, if there is no boy in the family, the family will be looked down upon by others with boys. So it’s so normal that we can see there are more than three children in a family. Maybe it will cause other problems such as lacks of economy supporting, caused that there will be some of the children go to work outside at their early age, even before graduate from junior middle school. But the family members didn’t worry about it, as long as they have boys.
In the city, it seems much more different, the people lived in city don’t focus on having a boy in the family, there are a lot of families just having a girl each, and they don’t plan to have another one, they think it’s equal to have a son or a daughter. Although they are much richer than people in the countryside and they can afford more children, they just don’t want to have another one, as they have the attitude that the only one is the best one. Maybe it’s because of the difference of culture and environment, people have different opinion on boy and girl. Haha, maybe half and half is the best in the world.

- Thousands of years passed and some people still prefer birth to boys than girls. Such preferences are acceptable before in the old days, when people earn their living on farming. More males means more farm hands. However, all that has changed, farms are mechanized and don't need much labor. Who wants to be a farmer or laborer anyway.
In the past, people had up 6 children in a family but if people do that now, the result would be 6 poor boys without enough food, clothes, care and education. Now people realize that one is better than six.
Traditions are hard to change. The elders still believe that there should be a male to carry on the male lineage and family name. They are of the opinion that if you unless you have a son, you are considered childless. A daughter would not be sufficient. Some stupid people or relatives would say that a family is incomplete until you have a son and that gives pressures to a mother to chase for a son, but quite often, the result is a daughter again and again, leaving the family in desperation.
Today's women have experienced gender discrimination so they are fearful that their own daughters will also suffer from such treatment, so they prefer a son. What these parents don't know is that there are already too much males and too few females in our society. Having a daughter would prove to be valuable in the next 10-20 years. Commonsense would show that truth. Sometimes, social and family pressure is hard to bear, so it all depends on your situation. Bear it or surrender.
