I don't believe that one longs for a soul mate as much as any other one does. One who longs for fame and celebrity, for instance, may just once in a blue moon think of having a soul mate, while not even knowing what on earth a soul mate is, and what he has to be after it for. Can a world of favour prevail over a minute heart of sympathy, and superstition over understanding? No. Two choices are a world of recognition and a word of appreciation, and the latter I would rather take. A soul mate acclaims you for he knows you rather than follow others; a soul mate criticizes you for he finds the ailing which you are bothering about finding out, while rather ignorant to death are the commenters.
我不认为一个人对心灵的知己的渴望会和其他任何一个人一样。比如，渴望声誉和知名度的人，只会千载难逢地有那么一次想到要有个心灵知己，而与此同时甚至都不知道心灵知己究竟是什么，为什么他不得不去追求。满世界对你的的喜爱能否胜过一颗渺小的同情之心，世人对自己的迷信能胜过一人对自己的了解吗？不能。如果有两个选择，一个是满世界的认识，一个是一语之辞的欣赏，我宁可愿意选择后者。一个心灵的知己赞扬你，是因为他了解你，而不是因为他信从他人；一个心灵的知己批判你，是因为他找到了你劳心费神一直想找到的痛恙，而那些评头论足的人却根本是无知透顶。
