A More Balanced Future

Hot 4410 views. 2014-8-6 15:22 |Individual Classification:Reflection| cities, big, small, job, education

I've been looking for a job as an intern lately, and to my disappointment, most companies with an intention of hiring an intern is located in Beijing or Shanghai, or at least one of those south-east "big cities".  I, however, who had originally live in a so-called third-class city in middle China, will continue my post graduate study in a provincial capital city located in western China. There are not many intern positions available in both places.

As I grew older I met more people, and gradually came to understand that not only the family you are born to, but also the place you are born in, greatly influence your life. This may be hard to accept at the sound of it since we take it for granted that modernisation progresses, cities grow alike. The reality, however, is cruelly not so. I can tell many stories but a case in point would be a cyber-friend of mine who just graduated from high school. She took part and got tired of Model United Nations during her middle school years, whilst I, five years older than her, only knew what MUN stands for until I got into college. The idea of making judgment using MUN as a standard may sounds silly, but it is of some reason. A southern provincial capital city v.s. a third-class city in middle China, the difference speaks for itself.

I believe if given the chance, I could be just as great as any of those who have grew up and make a living in metropolises. Even now, I can proudly speak for myself that I am a better person than some of them. Yet I still feel sorry for myself and many who share my stories. Life has never been completely fair, but isn't better we make it fairer? Big cities are like magnets attracting billions every year coming to them. They are noisy, busy, full of pushy people. Some of them fight for their dreams and won, some fight and die. Isn't it better for everyone that we just give small city more chances and allow youngsters grow up in there an opportunity to see the world without having to betray their hometown? The question of "do you prefer big cities of small cities" frequently asked in exams and interviews is senseless. It is not a way trying to find the solution rather a way to exacerbate the problem. When people are forced to make their choices based on problems such as infrastructure and entertainment. The choice itself is limited. Only when people can comfortably live in big cities and small cities enjoying the same chance of acquiring good education, job opportunities, and other social welfare, can we discuss the above-mentioned question out of our free will.

Actually, I meet the same problem-- internships. I don't know MUN before going to college, either. The regional differences is formed and existed for a long time, and cannot solve quickly. The level of development and education are big different. What is matter is to be optimistic, improve ourselves and do our best to change something. We have to admit that even the third-class city is developing, the level of education is enhancing. To me, I weigh the cities based on my character and personality. Best wishes to you.

We all are hoping for a more balanced world to live in. However,  unpleasant matters occur constantly in life. I know, you are a confident person. You believe that you are better than most of people in the big cities. Since you have that courage to proudly speak for yourself, why not make your life better through your continuous long-term endeavor?I know one day, you will not regret what you have done.

I study in a second line city. I have a problem like you. Sometime, I have some thinking that what would happen if I studied to a better city. But if I went to another city, I would not meet the people I meet now. So, cherish you have now.

Thank you being sympathetic. It's always comforting to know someone shares your opinion.
Time will come for all cities, and to me metropolis is only a tortured image of the early stage of modern society.
Best wishes to you too.

Thank you for your encouragements. My "proudly speak so" statement was emotional and irrational, with no statistically proof. Yet I'm still glad. At least I'm young enough to boast such things, LOL
Best,
Lauren

I believe the problem I've met is common for people with the same geographic background. Unsatisfactory as it is, we've grown up. So maybe it does not matter that much? With time and endeavour, we might be able to finally get better.
Thank you for sharing your opinion.
Best,
Lauren

It's true in China. Maybe it's unfair for people in small cities compared with thoes in big cities. And there is undergoing some reforms, but the effects are hard to be predicted.
