Hi~How are you today?
I bet it must be a busy day because it`s in the middle of of a week. This Saturaday is the Dragon Boat Festival and we`ll have a three-day off!
This afternoon i attended a lecture given by Professor Lin,jury of an authorized translation contest, who is specialized in translation. He has stayed abroad in different countried for 15years and even visited the Queen of England.
He gave us an inspiring lecture on translating Chinese elements. For example, in a novel of Moyan, the Nobel Prize Winner, he wrote"得了吧你"
Then how to translate this? What about"Forget about it "
Based on Prof.Lin`s explanation, a better version may be "Save it, you"or "Save your flatter".So when it comes to translation , three approaches can be adopted:Liiteral translation, authentic way of translating(use local idioms ) or translating it into literature.
Though now i can`t achieve the second and third level, at least i have already known my weaknesses. Previously, i just translated the specific word into another language. From this moment, i will take the whole passage and context into consideration.
If you have any experience or advice on translation, please don`t hestitate to tell me! I`ll highly apprecite that!
Today i will share you guys a cultural issue here.If you don`t know this, it will be embarrassing and cause misunderstandings!
In American, if you say"She is a girl "or "He is a boy" What do you mean?
Does it mean that she is a virgin?or she is just a little girl?or she is timid? Please brainstorm before you see the answer.
So, it means the sexual orientation of that person! It means she is not a lesbian or he is not a gay.
Next time, before you say to a boy "I`m a girl".Be careful! He might think that you are implying that you have a crush on him.
This is a photo of Colossoe snapped by me last year.I lost my heart to at at the first sight! As for the histrory and memory this building has witnessed, we`ll catch that later~
Have a sweet dream!
