what types of books should i read, serious or light?

Hot 5749 views. 2014-10-23 21:45 | dynasty, written, should

"1587,a year of no significance, the Ming dynasty in decline"(万历十五年)written by Ray Huang got into my list by chance yesterday. In my eyes,as a book depicting history,it is rigorous but not that serious, quite different from other works on history i have ever met.In regard of Ming dynasty, you may think of ''those of Ming dynasty"(明朝那些事)by Dangnianmingyue,in which an extremely unique language style-humorous,funny,or even somehow hooligan like, is used. And my question is:in term of getting to know about Ming dynasty, which book should i choose, the former or the latter?
In college,I was deeply influenced by WangQiang, one of the  founders of New Oriental, who is a real book worm.He argues that only the first-class books should be read and I made this opinion as my standard of choosing a book, yet it doesn't last too long before i compromised with my inertia. In retrospect, always being with a serious book let me feel not that free or comfortable and i acknowledge that i am far away from where WangQiang has reached.
These days i still try to add first-class ones into my reading list, yet also can't help to take some light ones like "all scenes where couples quarrel".Maybe all these types of books will be my friends, just with a verifying ratio in different periods of my lifetime.

I don't like those too serious books, because I can't continue it by the end, when there are some humorous and funny things in a book, I enjoy it.

i found it in Shanxi provincial library,it depicts lots of scenes where couples may fight and also offers some advice about how to avoid those unpleasant moments.

Just looking at the title, "1587, a year of no significance, the Ming dynasty in decline", I feel it is much serious and authoritative on history. Maybe you could read both of them in that period, and treat the second one as the means of relaxing. I am likely to have little interests for those so-called first-class books.

I like history,in  junior school,my history result was good because I was interested in it.But the first-class books of history is too serious and difficult. You can read it with the accessory materials or read the second-class books then you can understand it better.Keep your passion in this!Good luck!

Thank you so much. There are many instructive words., but it's really difficult about "balanced diet" in reading. In fact, I am much casual on choosing books based on my interest.
