After reading the Declaration of Independence

That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it.

 

After reading the Declaration of Independence, I am most impressed by the sentences mentioned at the very beginning of this essay, which make it clear that the government is founded at the basis of the consent of people.

As far as I am concerned, the government is nothing else but an organization of which the aim is to serve the citizens. The government is entitled to handle the public problems in order to secure these rights of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. In addition, people pay taxes to guarantee the everyday work of government. In another word, the government is supported by the people and it relies on the people.

Now we can safely draw a conclusion that the people are masters while the government is a servant.

Only when the government serves the people soul and heart, can it exist for ever. If the government abuses its authority to exploit the citizens, such as imposes high taxes on people to excess or forbids the citizens from participating in democracy, it must be overthrown. It is obvious that if a servant cannot meet the needs of his master or even he betrays the master, he will be fired.

The people are endowed by their creator with the right to supervise the government. However, it is a pity that most of us are not conscious of the fact that we are the master of the government. Especially in some ancient Asian countries, a great number of citizens view the government as an emperor, so that they never struggle for their legal rights when they are faced up with unfair treatments.

At the end of the essay, I appeal to all citizens to read Declaration of Independence, making yourselves aware of your rights and supervising the government strictly.
