We all know table manners play a vital role in our daily life . But they are not the same everywhere . Here are some things you need to know about table manners in our country .
In China the dishes are placed on the table and everyone shares. You are not allowed to speak with your mouth full . It is not good manners to show all the food in your mouth . You are really not supposed to have your elbows all over the table .
Of course , the main difference on the Chinese dinner table is chopsticks instead of the knife and fork . It is rude to tap on your bowl with your chopsticks .  And you are not allowed to stick your chopsticks in the rice bowl .

I have come across a lot of funny situations where I did the wrong things or say something wrong. I once used the word 'go to die' jokingly to a friend beside me at a birthday celebration of a 90 year old elderly man. The elderly man looked at me with cursing eyes. I immediately tried to repair that by saying aged 90 is a blessing and living past 100 is surely expected. That brought a reluctant smile from him and he seems not to mind what I said.

I once went to a friend's home for their family dinner. Everyone was talking while eating and their chewed food was visible in their mouths. They asked me to take some soup, but the soup tasted like plain water. Later, my friend told me that it is very hard to make tasty thick soup for so many people.

Western table manners are also complicated. As you probably know;
- There are different utensils, forks & spoons. Work your way from outside to in. Right hand spoon and left hand forks and knives.
- You have to wait for the host to tell you where to sit. Don't choose.
- Do not take more than 1 slice of bread each time.
- Take small bites of food and do act if you never eaten before.
- When you are asked to pass plates of food over to other side of table,
pass it through your neighbor and not directly over the table.
- Conversations at the dining table should be civil, kind, nice and never
criticize or gossip about others. Talk softly by audibly.
- Put the napkin next to your plate on the table when you need to leave. Wait for your host to indicate the meal is complete. Then stand up. Push your chair gently back in and thank your host for a delicious meal, the say goodbye.

Western dinner gifts are a little different. Usually a bottle or Red wine, Chocolates in a nice box. Tea sets. Nowadays people give Cellphones as gifts too.
