alone or lonely?

Some person said that I am used to be alone, but I am not lonely
Some person said that I am lonely when I am surrounded with people.
So, then lonely or not it should not only depend on the the environment.
I was used to be alone and lonely because I was the only son in my family, I did not have other acompany with me to have fun. It was a little bit pity that there was only child in my family. It miss a lot of fun to be playing with other brother or sister.
Then, it does relate with the environment for the childhood periods
And is that better when I grow up as adult. Surely it is not, the bigger, the lonelier too.
It is easy to not be alone, but it is hard to get rid of the loneliness.
Loneliness looks like a kind of nature which was rooted in my heart.

- Pssst.. Tell you a secret... The thing I am most worried about is loneliness when I reach ''old age''.
I always wonder, will anyone like to be near or accompany me when I am old, disabled or slow and using a walking stick? I see the old people at the park and sometimes I talk to them voluntarily. Most of them live alone, neglected by their family and don't have friends.
Perhaps I am fortunate that I was never lonely in my childhood as I have six brothers and sisters, plus lots of neighborhood friends to accompany me. Good days don't last too long. It is unreasonable to expect too much. Some day I too would have to join the world of lonely and neglected people. That is the reality of life.
Is loneliness really so terrible? Perhaps not. What is the opposite word of lonely? I asked my professor but I was surprised that there is no opposite word. Is it because that there are no unlonely people in this world? So, I have to invented a new word ''unlonely'' - There is no such English word.
People like to have friends and company but somehow people can't talk to each other because of inhibitions, self protection, fear, pride, lack of confidence or other personal reasons. It seems normal that we don't even know who our next door neighbors are. Old friends move out of town and don't communicate. New friends are materialistic and can't talk in depth heart to heart. Nobody cares about the others.
The world is getting lonelier and lonelier. Cellphones seem to allow us to connect to more people but those are only electronic waves and there is no real friendship in those contacts.
Sooner or later, we all may become lonely people and perhaps loneliness may become the norm of life. Lets face it.
