Chongqing city is named “Mountain City” due to it was embraced by Yangtze and Jialing rivers. Now one lane shared that name, as it vividly reflect the city’s geographical features. The lane is 700 meters long and only three to four meters wide. The difference in altitude between the highest and lowest points of the lane is 70 meters. Even one section of the lane was built on the cliff.
Ren Ai church, Ren Ai hospital, convent and missionary school were built along the lane by the French missionaries. They also placed streetlights along the lane, when they were turned on in the night, they look like stars in the sky. During anti-Japanese wars, Ren Ai hospital undertook the responsibility of sheltering the wounded people, including children, students and soldier men.
Houlu is one of the best-known buildings lined the lane. It was the former residence of the Lan Wenbin, a commander who defended the Chongqing during the anti-Japanese wars. He opened a school for orphans so he was acclaimed by Chongqing’s residents.
Nowadays, the lane is home to ordinary residents. People chat, play mahjong and enjoy the view of the Yangtze Rivers. They really enjoy the harmonious and relaxing lifestyle.
