Study in UK

Hot 3433 views. 2015-10-25 13:50

Today, I want to talk something about the study in University of Bath.

I am an automotive engineering student, and I got my bachelor’s degree at Hunan University. For an engineering student, it is a piece of cake to find a job, I just I don’t want to work right now. Having a chance to experience different cultures can be great.

We have a large population, and we need higher education for fierce job competition, both of which are the reason for why Chinese postgraduates are the biggest part of all international student. However, it never occurred to me that it is the same for our engineering students.
There are 29 students in my class, 24 of them are Chinese. My roommate is studying economics and finance, and in his class, 60 out of 65 are Chinese.

Anyway, the total expense of 1 year postgraduate in the UK is affordable for quite a few Chinese families just like mine, but not enough for the 3-4 year undergraduate. However, the tuition for Chinese students is 3-4 times than the UK students’, and I am really unhappy! Moreover, there are no native students in my class, I come to England all the time, and I don’t have any English classmates. .

One thing I am getting used to is that there is no time for a nap here. In China, morning classes finish at around 12, and the classes in the afternoon start at 2:30pm. We go back to the dorm after lunch. So, the first 2 weeks here, I was really sleepy during the afternoon classes. I spent some time in the library after lunch, and I wondered why nobody was on the table to take a nap. If you get a chance to go to the library at a Chinese university, almost everybody will be on the table for a small period time to take a nap. Anyway, after I started drinking coffee, problem solved! though during the last class in the afternoon I was still tired.

Ok, could somebody please tell me the difference between Latte, Americano, Expresso, Cappuccino?

That’s all for today, there are a lot of good aspects I want to say. But academia is killing me!!

You are fortunate to have the chance to study in UK as the world's best schools and universities are in the UK, like Cambridge and Oxford. Treasure this opportunity as it is not easy to come by. You have provided interesting information for friends here who are wondering what it is like to study in the UK. Nice of you to do that. Let everybody know more as it appears you can write at ease in English.

It is not too bad to have lots of Chinese schoolmates otherwise you would feel  homesick. You would have plenty of chance to meet and know the locals. Try to take the initiative to approach and talk to them as British people have the mindset that Chinese people are reserved and conservative. Some even don't like to make friends with the British people.

As for afternoon naps, don't worry, you would get used to that in a few months and you would not longer to feel sleepy in the afternoon as it is daytime and sleep don't go well in daytime. You would find your night sleep much better and deeper in the night. No need for coffee as coffee effects lasts only an hour or two.

Here are the different coffee flavors so next you go to Starbucks, you would know which one to try;

ESPRESSO: A finely ground very dark roast coffee filtered into a very strong dark coffee.

AMERICANO: Italians typically don't drink American Strength coffee. They drink espresso in tiny cups. Then the Americans came and wanted a big mug of coffee like those they drink at home, so people call it Americano which means big cup of coffee.

CAPPUCCINO: It is sort of  1:1:1 ratio of espresso, steamed milk, and milk foam. Steamed through a special high pressure steam pipe. This has two purpose. To warm up the milk and to create a stiff foam on the top. When pouring, the foam is held back with a spoon, and then scooped out on top to make it look foamy and attractive. A decorative effect.

LATTE or Caffe au Lait: Strong filtered or brewed coffee, with warmed milk. This is the easiest coffee to make at home

MOCHA: You have not mentioned this but should try it because it has nice Chocolate flavor. Any one of the above espresso + milk drinks with chocolate added.  Easiest to make at home and has a little bit of a naturally occurring chocolate flavour.

It must have disappointed you very much that there's no native students in your class.
