The question is, that do you think the reason that China become such a powerful nation is because we have a large population?

The government won't tell you, but the one child policy has created a lot of problems.

* There are more males than females because every family wants a son.
* There are much more old people now than young because past 20 years
   less people are born.

There is imbalance of males and females causing social problems in the villages. Soon there would be lot of men complaining unable to find a wife.

There is labor shortage because old people can't work. The labor cost goes up and the industries would fail.

The government allow each family to have 2 children but the people already said, one is enough or 2 is maximum, so no need for government to say two allowed.

We have to understand that China's recent prosperity is not only China. Japan, Korea, Taiwan etc already prospered long ago. Now Vietnam, Thailand and many SE Asian countries are coming up too and they are producing lots of products. Due to these reasons, China is now not relying on industry and change to higher quality industry. These high tech industry does not require much labor, so new problems will come and workers won't have jobs.

It is not easy to run such a large country but careful planning is required.

Bravo! What you said above is impressive and instrutive, but I have different opinions.

First of all, according to the law, people have no chance(or right) to get to choose the genders of the children they are going to give birth. Because gynecologists and obstetricians are forbidden to tell parents their babies' gender before babies' birth. Plus, nowadays people treat two genders more and more equal. So, I don't think this is a big deal.

Second of all, the increasing aging population caused by policy of childbirth encouragement issued decades years ago,so it is an inevitable process for China to go through. We cann't try to solve this problem by leading us to another population crisis.

Third of all, the rapid development of modern technology will replace a lot of labour in foundamental work fields. So, the more babies get birth today, the more people will be unemployed tomorrow.

Last but not the least, I don't oppose goverment to change one-child limitation to two-child policy. What I was trying to say is that we don't need to change it right now, we can do it like 5 years later.

Oh, sorry to mention that you put Taiwan apart from China in the second paragraph from the bottom, I hope you didn't mean what I think you would mean, right?

Good analysis. Oh, I never regarded Taiwan is a separate country. You appear to be a knowledgeable person. When you say babys, I think you mean 'babies' in proper English.. haha nobody cares about proper English anyway.

Though the revealing of the baby's gender before birth is forbidden by law, many parents can be easy to know the gender of the baby privately before birth by giving some benefit to the doctor. It is hard to supervise and nearly no supervise currently  for the gender revealing before birth.  I found  the concept of prefering boys to girls  is still very severe in my surrounding friends, colleagues.

Actually, I do not think it is a good policy. You can find there is no such a terrible policy made in any other country. Even if now the government allows couples to have their second child, it finds hard for mose of them. There are many reasons, one of which is the cost of raising a kid so expensive.
Of course a country needs some certain amount of polulation supporting its development, while not just only on how many people it has, also depends on its status of many fields of policy-opening.
