Do Accents matter in English-Speaking countries

Hot 6823 views. 2016-3-29 17:28 | language, accent, speaking English

In Mainland China, there’s one standard Chinese Pronunciation –Mandarin. We learn “HanYuPinYin”  from kindergarten or primary school, also can be heard on TV or Radio, Therefore, it is really not difficult to follow.

However, Australia, which is a multi-cultural country, you can hear accents worldwide—Australian, Indian, Chinese, Malaysian, Asian, English, Scottish, American, European, African, Middle East  etc, I was shocked who I could follow with.

I asked My Aussie Friends in the Uni and company : “  Do you learn pronunciation in the School?” “ no ,we have never taught about that”, even the younger generation who entered private school , the Aussie  accents are gained from their school teacher or Parents, there’s no one proper pronunciation book or class as we do in China. High educated people speak  closer to Aussie Accent, people from countryside, or lower educated ones ,that would be pretty hard to understand the time I first arrived. There’s no uniformed one on TV or Radio either.

Even I heard from my colleague, one lady who is a  half caste( Mum English, Dad Aussie) said, “ the accents in Britain are very different, people from London might speak very standard Queen English, or high educated ones, or people from rich area- I heard a word” posh”. However,  the way up to the North, eg, Scotland, you will wonder “ Do they speak English?” I have one friend from Scotland, I could understand him from face-to-face, but I would always ask “  Sorry, I lost you, could you please say again?” when we made phone calls.

Does the Accent really matters, when a foreigner talks to  native English Speakers?

I would like say no any local people will expect your speaking English as perfect as them. Only if you were born in English Speaking country, or came to the country in very little age. Then , there’s no doubt , you will speak as good as natives. But one thing is important, speak English as clear as possible, if people couldn’t understand you, then you will have less competitive advantage to someone who speaks better than you. Also, after you get a job, clients or customers will have very little patience talking with someone they could hardly catch up.

It really depends on what your goal is ? Finding a job ,  to be a manager in a foreigner-run company?  or just making friends with someone who speak English or simply travelling overseas? Or simply for fun, do you feel joyment or pain in learning English?  Then decide if it is worth for you spending time improving your pronunciation. It is time-consuming,  I can guarantee you.

Yes, I would like say “ absolutely, you can make it no matter how bad your English pronunciation at this stage”.  I am a very good example.

I am much older than most of you guys here I guess, when I was a child, the education was very under-standard. I even didn’t have a tape record, I couldn’t make comment for how good my English teacher was. I wrote Chinese under English sentences, that’s how I pronounced English. Now you can tell how bad my English would be. It was until I turned to 18 years old, my life was miserable, that’s completely not the way I enjoyed. That time, my aunt was in  the USA, and I have read a lot of stories regarding people living overseas. I got a dream—I wanna study abroad, I wanna change my life. That was a big goal, it seemed very unrealistic, my English was nearly 0. I couldn’t pronounce any English vocabulary properly.

After making a big decision, I started learning English by myself, I went to the bookstore bought a tape record and English pronunciation book , I taught myself very carefully, where to put my tongue? how to pronoun according to the photos showed on the book and the tape record I listened. I practiced at home really hard, it took me 3 months completing the book. Now, I am pretty happy about my basic English Pronunciation. The next step, I looked up every single English word from the dictionary, and wrote down the pronunciation under each word, read it over and over by following the tape record. That’s how I started English learning.

After more than 10 years, my life has been changed dramatically, I realized my dream-studying overseas and doing accounting job in an Aussie company. I am pretty confident about my English accent at the moment. I couldn’t say how good it is, but I heard a Japanese guy and a Korea girl said: “ wow, your English is very clear”, “ you don’t have much accent as some other Chinese do.” One boy from Sri Lanka told me. So far I haven’t had communication problems with all my Aussie clients and  site managers talking on the phone.

One thing is for sure: having a clear English accent, will boost your self-confidence. You will willing to talk, and get more opportunities

i have noticed that every different country has it own accented English. The most difficult accent is Ireland, Scotland and some Norwegian countries.

However, I do find the accents of some countries cute. Australia is one of those. I often hear their accent on horse racing commentaries on TV.

The Americans love the true Queen's English. When Princess Diana and other royalties visit the US, the Americans were fascinated about their Queen's English. On the American hand, I feel the Americans have done a lot of damage to English by twisting and altering a lot of words. They are just trying to make American English different from British but it seems not that impressive.

I once hear someone said that Asians could never speak unaccented English, but that is not a true statement. People who have lived in genuinely English speaking countries like UK can speak like any British person and I have come across a lot of them.

Actually, accent is not that important so long as the accent is not too heavy. What matters is that people can listen and speak properly.

I once heard a South Korean  talked with his Chinese workmate by speaking Chinese When I waited a interview in a Chinese branch company of Samsung. The Korean accent was very obvious when he spoke Chinese, but I can comprehend his words clearly. Finally,I found the pronunciation of the foreign language is not so important as I thought before.Others can understand your words as long as you do not speak too abnormally.

Thanks, Rosanna, for you paying attention to details what I wrote. Haha, that’s funny, it’s not only me who wrote Chinese under English Sentences.
I suppose, as an adult, who would like learn language properly, it’s better to put great effort at start with-  how to pronounce correctly, once the basic be built up, it will be much easier to move on to next level with self-confidence.

Thanks, stone2016, I am very happy if you can get encouraged by my story. As I was very frustrated that time , nobody supported me, I couldn’t see the lights ahead. I was inspired by the stories I read from the books as well.

Thanks , Lynnshine, Interesting story, yes, you are right, as long as you have self-confidence, people understand what you are talking about, that’s ok, for someone who works as professional , eg,   call centre, or  a radio broadcaster, a TV host, probably it will be expected at a  higher level. My  home phone supplier employs Philippines work in call centre overseas, I thought  they were Americans, they speak very good English with American Accent. If only travel sort of, who cares what accent you have

Thanks , Sunnyv, You make me laugh when you talked about Australian Accent , actually on Melbourne Cup Day, the voice was pretty standard, if you go to countryside, you will find it more cute.

In China, the elder generation , like me, we learned kind of BBC English from tape record( though I still hold Chinese accent) the younger generation, started learning American English, they regard it as  fashion, which is available on American Movie, speak of by most Movie Stars, and it is popular, it is a trend.  Well, my friend’s son who was born in Australian, he speaks exactly like Aussie. But for an adult, if go overseas above certain age, that would be very hard to change accent.

You have said it right. Those who are concerned about their Chinese accent should note your comments. The accent doesn't really matters. What matters is whether others understand.

I am wondering where the Australian accent came from because there were only aboriginals before the Brits arrived. On the other hand, it is known that Australians are not that tolerant to new immigrants but that seems to be improving.

Haha, what's the day today?

Everyone's talking about accent. I agree with you nobody actually cares about your accent as long as they understand what you are talking about. It is like handwriting, people can see clearly, that's ok.

However, it depends on what level you wanna reach, if you have time, if you gonna make improvement, then you might need  spend time on it.
Eg, I heard a few Chinese movie stars who pursued their dream in Hollywood, they spent fairly amount of time improving their speaking English including accent.. Just getting closer..

Is it worth for ordinary people?

I used to improve English speaking by reading follow the tape record.. Someone might watching movie, it might be more effective if talk with native speakers, but it is a long progress.

Certainly, Australia is an advanced country. Can't say everyone is considered equal there, but it does offer security and stability. You are in the right place and possibly the right time. Have a good time.
