i don't live my life through the eyes of someone else

Hot 4755 views. 2016-5-5 10:39 | sometimes, Shanghai, someone, through, clothes, Shanghai

I didn’t feel awkward when I wore a coat which was bought 10 years ago while walked passing through Melbourne CBD this morning with the majority of office workers having the most fashionable clothes on. It was not me the time when I lived in Shanghai. In my memory, I didn’t wear have clothes more than 2 years old or even one year old as that would be considered out of fashion as sometimes I would be stressed out by someone trying to compete for what I wore.

While in Melbourne, I still keep a lot of clothes which I bought many years ago and I feel more than happy to have them on. Why throw it as long as I feel comfortable enough to wear, actually nobody cares about your style, no one says anything for what you wear. With the money, I bought an expensive DIOR belt, or Salvatore Ferragamo bag and wallet made in Italy as long as I liked.

My brother used to change mobile every year, “What’s for?” I asked, “Because everyone’s using a new model in shanghai.” I was a bit doubt. But when I visited China at the beginning of this year, wow, I did see a lot of people calling from IPHONE 6 at most of tourist spots I visited.  Look at me, I am still using IPHONE 5s which I bought more than 2 years ago. A few years ago, one classmate told me: “ When I was on holiday in Shanghai, my mum was very curious about why I was still using such old  mobile phone, my mum said no young girls keeping that style anymore in Shanghai. “ “Well, in Australia, we are becoming countryside people, who care who.” I answered.

When I was on holiday in China this February, as  I didn’t take enough winter clothes with me, I searched the wardrobe, My God , there were a pile of brand new clothes I bought 10 years ago. I found it really good. Why I considered it out of style the time I was in China. Hurry up, I carried all the old clothes with me while I traveled around the China, they were perfect.

I realized there’s nothing you can do or not do, it is only on your mind—change your thinking, no comparison, don’t live in other people’s eyes, then you will be more satisfied for what you’ve got.

Nowadays, in most countries, people prefer to wear casual and comfortable clothing. Formal wear is only for special occasions. Everyone has his own suitability to certain types of clothes. Some look good in jeans while others look good in pants. Some men look great in suits while other look smart in T-Shirt and jeans.

Most of the people I know keep past old clothing in their own cupboards and the reason is because some of those clothes are still wearable and why waste it?

Those expensive brand names in clothes and accessories are meant to show off their wealth and status. A person who has sufficient confidence does not need those big brand names. We should consider the quality of the items.

I have many clothes which I bough many years ago and they are still fine enough to wear. I do not dump them and choose to put them on when I am free on weekends.

Since most of the time I spend my time in the office during working days where I only wear suit. Therefore many of my clothes are rarely to wear and I just feel it ok to have those old style clothes but comfortable enough. I do not care money spent on something which is really helpful or a must to consume even it is the so called expensive items. But I never waste money on buying stuff out of plan.

As the phone, I do not buy iphone, just an ordinary one which I have used for almsot one and half years. I will still keep it as long as it is ok with it battery charging. I do not care what others think of it, I do as I want.

So  I do admire your persistence and your style. At least it resembles that we have something in common.

Thanks, Sunnyv

Actually, keeping old clothes is not a good habit as it wastes a lot of time for finding a suitable one to wear each morning and occupies limited space. I used to addict buying latest expensive clothes in order to keep fashion, and then I gave away the following year.

Now, I have changed my mind, why waste so much money in order to cater for other people thinking about your appearance. I don’t  live for them, I live for myself. So I gradually buy less and less, only with really good quality ones. Sometimes clothes actually can never be out of date as long as it suits you.

Anyway, to my understanding, Asians care more about fashion than westerners, I feel very relaxing wearing old clothes in Australia.

Can you imagine, I used to buy 20kgs clothes each year when I was on holiday in China. Then I found a problem I couldn’t find space for them at all. some clothes I never wear by keeping them in the storage. I gave some away, but still keep some really good style which suits me perfectly. Now I stop buying too much each year, only some very good ones.

Actually I found mixing wear is a good idea, eg, I will wear one top which was bought many years ago ( still new, as I seldom wear it), with a fashionable pants bought recently, or a nice belt, for shoes and bags, I have pretty high standard, I prefer made in Italy, but they can be used for  many years, so it won’t waste money.

Hi, Teadrinking:

It seems you are a very organized person as you only spend money on essential things, to be honest, that’s a really good habit. As you are not indulged in material things, you care more about your inner happiness.

I used to only use the mobiles my brother gave me as he thought that was out of fashion. For me, it doesn’t matter, as long as it operates well.

One my Aussie friend, who works the hardest, have a few properties and one cruise, I was surprised to see he’s using the mobile might be 100 years old, I don’t encourage that though.
One most important, whatever you use, as long as you feel happy, that’s all

What a coincidence!!! I was there on the 15&16 of Feb. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did- the lovely music from African Drum Shops, well, I bought one CD, and listened to it over and over while sitting in the car.  I couldn’t help eating traditional snacks, simply 2 days there was enough to taste all kinds of yummy food. The sky was really clear that day.
