There are some days that I really dislike during a year, my friends' or whose birthdays. I don't mean that I don't want to celebrate for them, but it's just too difficult to choose a perfect birthday gift. 
I could remember when I began to give my friends birthday gifts. But when we were children, we only sent each other a card made by ourselves and wrote or drew something on it. It was very simple, but we were still very happy to receive such a card. And I still got many of them in my drawer. However, when I was 12, I received my first birthday gift from my friend Meng. I was so happy and surprised. And wishing to make my friend happy, I also gave her a gift in her birthday. But what I didn't expect was that one of my friends was angry with me because I didn't give her a gift while I gave Meng one. So henceforth, I began to give every friend a birthday gift because I was afraid they would be unhappy. 
Maybe I could say that as we grow up, what we want is no longer just a handmade card. If you send a card to your friends as a birthday gift, of course she will be happy to get your blessing, but after compared with the gifts other people give her, she may be a little disappointed. I don't mean everybody cares about gifts, but many do. 
Giving a gift becomes a way to maintain a relationship instead of just a celebration. When I receive a birthday gift, what I think about is not just happiness, I would think that how much is the gift and what should I give my friend when her birthday comes.
