Whose name was written in water

Hot 5692 views. 2017-10-21 11:35

"Here lies one whose name was written in water", this is the epitaph that Keats wrote for himself. He did not want to carve his name on the gravestone, but to write it in water and let it go with gentle flow. Although he did like this, his poems have always been well known all over the world.

He was born in London in 1795.Incidentally, he is also an outstanding representative of the romantic poets and as famous as Gorge Gorden Byron and Percy Bysshe Shelley.

Keats's parents died at his young age, and of course this kind of grief affected his entire life.Afterward he was admitted to Enfield School and his capability of reading and writing was known to the public. In 1810 he was apprenticed to a pharmacist and in 1815 he was admitted to King's College London. From that moment on, he gave up studying medicine and was engaged in writing poems instead. In 1821, Keats died of tuberculosis at the age of 25.His whole life was short and rough but he still left ample attractive poetry with refined rhetoric.

His masterpieces are impressive and sorrowful, such as Ode to a Nightingale, Ode on a Grecian Urn, To Autumn and Ode on Melancholy. He has a persistent worship of natural beauty. For example, he expressed his attitude of nature and the pursuit of beauty in To Autumn.

In fact, I ever read John Keat's poems in my senior high school, but what I read is the translated version, just because I think the original version is so obscure like Shakespeare's sonnets that I can't insist on reading it.So I really admire you! What I love him most is his attitude of life. His poem is full of the desire of freedom. I like freedom.

Poets have an unattainable level of beauty, and their poetry can touch the soul. The poets of history seem to die early, and my favorite poet Haizi, who chose to kill himself at the age of 25, is regretful, but not the end of their life.

I'm agree with you that his death absolutely isn't the end of his spirit. He dedicated himself to poetry so that his mind and the poetry all melt into one.

You are such a young girl with deep mind. I admire your interest in poets. Although I DON'T read poets very often, reading your article interests me. I really want to read his poets when I am free.

Actually, I merely read the versions translated into Chinese which has moved me deeply, so I set my mind to reading his poets earnestly when my ability of English comprehension improve greatly.
