It was 2250 years ago, in 230 B.C., China had been divided into seven states.
The King of the Qin State which was the strongest one of seven decided to unify the whole China.
Then he invaded the other states by war.
It took him ten years to beat six states and finally created a brand-new large country which was the first unified nation during Chinese history.
The King raised himself as The First Emperor of Qin.
He then standardized the Chinese script, currency and measurement system in order to develop the economy.
Defensing the enemy’s invasion, the Emperor had a Great Wall begun.
It would spend a great deal of material resources as well as need a huge number of laborers.
Plenty of young men from various parts of the country were forced to build the Great Wall reluctantly.
Fan Xi Liang, who was Lady Meng Jiang’s husband was included.
He had been forced to leave his wife by the army only three days after they were married.
Hearing that the work of building Great Wall was badly wretched, Lady Meng Jiang got very worried.
Soon after his setting out, she decided to find her husband.
With great difficulty, Lady Meng Jiang arrived at the Great Wall.
She looked everywhere for him but could not find him.
When she was feeling extremely disappointed, one of her husband’s fellow laborers told her that Fan Xi Liang had been killed by an accident of building the Wall.
The poor lady got deeply sad and began to cry.
She kept crying for three days and nights so that the Great Wall began to collapse and finally revealed her husband’s dead body.
After burying the body in despair, Lady Meng Jiang plunged herself into the sea.
Many years later, the Chinese built a temple at Shanhai Pass-the east beginning of the Great Wall-which was dedicated to the memory of Lady Meng Jiang’s loyalty.
