Sophie tended to hate old things and love new things. So after she had played the guitar for one or two months, she was no longer interested in it. Gradually she forgot her guitar. She hang it beside her bed and she seldom touched it. But one day the guitar played a crucial role in a special moment. 

It was a Sunday morning in November, at first nothing special. Study Nymphs and Diligent Nymphs had gone to self-study rooms. Other girls were in the dorm reading novels or reviewing their lessons. 

Then Helen took a look at the calendar and remembered that it was Cathy’s birthday. Perhaps Cathy was so diligent that she had forgotten her own birthday. So her roommates wanted to get something special for her birthday. But what could they do?

Then Sophie saw the guitar hang beside her bed. 

“I will tell you what we will do!” exclaimed Sophie. “Guitar!”

“Guitar?”

“Yes. Now everyone wait. Remember to start singing Happy Birthday as she opens the door. I will play the guitar for you. OK?”

“Guitar! Best! Let’s surprise her!”

“There is Cathy, quick!” cried Li, as steps sounded in the corridor. 

Somehow the sound of steps had a good effect upon the girls, for Cathy was coming, and everyone brightened to welcome her. Li stopped lecturing, Lucy got out of her bed curtain and Sophie held her guitar ready. Then Cathy came in hastily. At the proper time, Sophie got the music out of the guitar softly touching the strings, making a pleasant accompaniment to the simple birthday song they song in chorus: “Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you. Happy birthday dear Cathy, happy birthday to you!”

Both surprised and touched, Cathy smiled with her eyes full in her heartiest way on the spot. The song, the clapping and the music was going on merrily, Though Sophie did not play the guitar very well, and missed several notes. Before the last note stopped，Cathy ran to Sophie, gave her a kiss, and then hugged everyone.
