The more encyclopedic a mind, the less he indulges in high-sounding talks.

There are two kinds of self-abasement. One is when facing God, the man holds infinity in awe and has humility, is well aware of the limits of all human achievements, and never gets above himself. One is facing other people, that the man cares much about comparison with others in the aspects of brilliance, intellect, honors and whatever he puts stress on. He admires the strong, and accordingly despises the weak, so that his self-abasement is easily turned into a swelled head.

We have attached too much importance to the daylight, while too little of it to nighttime. But life has at least half inside the darkness—when dark and quiet, the heart of a man is still consciously wandering. Moreover, for a man who is clearly walking in the broad sunshine, he is very likely to be struggling inside the gloom and confusion of his soul, thus the ratio of night to day is far greater.

Thoughts intensify the language, and language embellishes thoughts. By lack of thoughts there is superficial language, and by lack of language are thoughts not aesthetic.

What is the turning point of life? It is not a day that is decisive once and for all, but a day from which the rest of life can prove this point.

To see the eternity of suffering is in fact that God shows mercy to you—it is the only way to cut off false obsession, and believe that love is the only help for mankind. The love here is not mere friendliness, compassion or joy to give; it is utterly the blessing of your own. The love is not lofty alms, but to look up humbly, so that you accept the suffering, and lead to the transcendence of spirit.
