We may have discovered that the inadequacies of human nature, such as cowardice, selfishness, greed, hypocrisy, ignorance... in the final analysis, all lead to the same end, where the crux lies in “weakness”—cowardice lies in timidity to confront the strong, selfishness in lacking human character by material temptation, greed in coping with desires the frailty of reason, hypocrisy in only strong appearance but low drive, and ignorance undoubtedly stems from the privation of knowledge, that is, the weakness of “wisdom”.

Since the weakness of human nature rises from psychology, it is not in necessary relation to whether the body is weak. In fact, many people with delicate physique and even handicap have proved their spiritual strength through confident and innocent smiles as well as their boundless love for life. Although the state of physical constitution has a huge impact on people, it is not the standard for measuring human weakness. The issue of humanity is, after all, that of human heart; the weakness of humanity originates ultimately from that which is “within”. Relatively, the qualities we humans all respect, such as willpower, courage, modesty, generosity, and so on, are all based on “inner strength”. Willpower derives from a firm and unshakable character; courage from being fearless inside; modesty from reverence at heart; and generosity from a broad mind. To break free from the weaknesses of human nature, we have no other way than to gradually strengthen the heart, and this process is a person’s self-improvement, as well as his life practice.
