Be a journalist, be rigorous we need

619 views. 2009-11-1 11:05 |

It’s easy to rise to fame for a journalist while it’s never easy to be a journalist in China. Journalists are faced with pressures from not only the government but also the public as well as the competition in the professional realm.

There are censorships from regulations, which could be easily seen when we Google something and down in the side appears “According to the local laws and regulations, some contents are not allowed to be accessed.” Blocking is a normal thing and the number of the blocked websites has risen to 500,000 in accordance with a research of Harvard University. Howbeit, the majority international news is fetched from foreign websites and the blocking behavior apparently affects the coverage.

Beating journalists is never news in China along with lots of them have experienced such situations when they endeavor to discover the conspiracies. They become famous and the sacrifice is it, they got beaten, as simple as it is. Businessmen utilize their advantage in wealth, striving to seduce and tame journalists with bribes, with lies or even with violence. People’s awareness of privacy protection is strengthening sharply, creating another blockage for interviewing and collecting useful information, and yet those who hide from journalists are the noisiest crowd who argue for more news in the web.

As to the interior competition inside the journalism field, it’s difficult to get information from the counterparts in other media. The internship experience shared by some seniors has proved so. They could scarcely obtain any useful information when asking about what happened in the scene they just arrived at. It’s annoying, but also understandable considering the fierce racing in discovering scoops when the internet technique is advancing itself minute by minute.

It’s like in a swamp, you can’t struggle so much if you want to survive since the stronger you struggle, the deeper you will get involved and the strategy is to stay calm and beat it with a good timing.

Good news is China has published a law to protect journalists’ interview right through delivering press cards which came into effect in the midst of October this year. A stick is hanging down to help journalists survive the swamp. The media summit in Beijing this year has also indicated a more open media in China. China is now on its way of becoming initiative in news media and it will benefit journalism in more freedom and wider coverage.

And us, the direct beneficiary of an open media policy should be rigorous on that. We are lucky but it does mean we are safe absolutely. We should be bold enough when facing with dangers using our brain not strength to overcome it. We should keep a cool mind whatever happens around, analyzing the aspects and balancing the reporting with no bias. I am not suggesting retreating but proposing that we should make both ends meet. We should care about the disadvantaged groups, while at the same time don’t embarrass them through overwhelming reporting. We ought to dig out truth in a smart and safe way, but if danger is in the prevailing, just let it a go. It’s not worthwhile to bet life on it.

It’s good journalist enough. Life is divine than fame. We are journalists for seeking a proper truth rather than a dangerous fame.
