Funny Road Signs

1443 views. 2009-12-15 20:07

Here are some funny road signs from America. Do not think that the Americans are good in English. They are not. Here we go...

Everyone knows they will be water on the road during rain.
What they are trying to tell? It should be
"Caution slippery road during rain".

Hey, wait a minute. It should be STOP not SOTP !

Poor parents, can't even spell "Arithmetic". Sorry for their kids.

Oh my god, should I go left or right?

Oh, I don't want to die yet. Quick turn back.
This is not profanity but there is really a city called Hell
in Livingston, Michigan, USA.
So, if next time somebody tell you to "go to hell", just
tell him, see you there in Michigan.

Oh, how to complain if you want me to keep quiet?
I think they mean Keep quiet while waiting for your turn.

Oh, how to park if the carpark is "disabled"?
Should be "Disabled Persons Parking".

Oh boy, here we go. Scratch head now.
What is the purpose of an entrance for which entrance is not allowed?

Yeah good hit back at the Americans who laughed at us saying that we could not pronounce the alphabet "r" properly. Put your own house in order before criticising others. It is your own mother language. Thumbs up for this.

Many of the funny signs can be found at remote country parks where it goes unoticed. In fact, there are quite a lot in US cities, for example the signs which says 'HANDICAPPED PARKING". How to park if the carpark is handicapped? It should be "PARKING FOR THE HANDICAPPED".

Oh haha give them some breathing space. Everything went down in USA during the presidency of George W Bush including their standard of English.

There was a sign which says 'STOP CHILDREN CROSSING". So, I tried to stop a kid who was about to cross the road and told him, look this sign says I should stop you from crossing. He looked at me, frowned and said, the sign is wrong. The intention is 'STOP! CHILDREN'S CROSSING" and all cars have to stop if a kid is about to cross. Just a simple "!" and the meaning is reversed. Not my fault. Damn.

Oh that means you can accept such mistakes on Chinese road signs? Public officials should be competent and such mistakes should not happen. It is amazing that I could hardly find any significant mistakes in Guangzhou road signs and notice boards on roads, subways, buildings, offices etc. Most places are bilingual both in English and Chinese. Well written, precise and clear. So easy to move around in Guangzhou. The high standard of English and precision really surprised me. China is really on the way to being international. Much better than Hong Kong. People are also geting more polite and presentable. Shame on you Hong Kong. Go and learn from motherland.

I don't think so. It depends on different culture and people's habit when dealing with different matters. In China, when it comes to public issues, let's say road signs and notice boards, people will be very strict and make them 100% precise, while maybe in other countries, they may take them much casual or even make them with humor (see, at least we have fun from those). Anyway I don't think it has much to do with shame though for sure they need to learn and improve.

My observation is that it that the perfect road signs and notices are not for show only. The authorities are really doing good work overall. The perfect road signs, paved roads with trees and plants on both sides, gleaming bank offices, public places, banks, customs and immigration checkpoints. All these things take a lot of effort and they have done it well. China is also clever in encourging students to learn English so that the country can benefit from globalisation and have a say in world affairs. May be you believe I am not familiar with the real China and that things are not that rosy deeper in China. You are wrong if you believe that. I understand that once you to the rural or village area, most of the things are shabby and the officials sometimes are not up to standard. We can't expect everything to improve so fast. They can do a good job in the cities so they will do the same good job later in the villages.

I didn't mean that, Sir. Actually I didn't mean anything in my comment. If I did say something, ok, that will be having fun from this is enough. As for what you said for Chinese rural area, yes, the current situation is not so satisfactory, and I also believe as what you said, they can also do the same good job later in the villages as they have done in the cities
