Do you speak English ? On the streets......

615 views. 2012-10-30 19:56 |

Do you speak English? Did any foreigner ask you that?
Can you think of unusual answers?

Sometimes I ask passersby for directions on the street and I get all sorts
of different replies, some humorous or funny.

Once I asked a lady in Tianjin. Excuse me, can you speak English?
She answered in English:
I think you should start learning some Chinese.. so guess? hehehe....

I asked a seemingly well educated man in Fujian.
Excuse me, do you speak English?
He answered jokingly in English: What about you?... haha.... good laugh.

At the Hangzhou Hotel. A employee at the desk...
Hi, Do you speak English?
Answer in English: It depends on the red packet... rubbing his thumb.
I replied back: Perhaps, you want to look for another job?

An American walked up to me at Tienaman Beijing and asked...
"Hi Do you speak American?".
I frowned and said... I am British so do you speak English? ..
Embarrassed this proud American knew I was not amused.
"Never mind, sorry to have bothered you and he walked off.

A foreigner asked a tall policeman in London (This is asking for trouble)
You speak English?
Answer: What did expect? Russian?

Keep smiling friends.

At least she knows how to say sorry. Not too bad.

Don't you think it was a little impolite to guess a lady. Teacher, if you ask me this question, my answer would be'' When you in Roma, do as romans do, when you in China, speak as Chinese people speak.'' Since you are working and living in China, it is better for you to learn Chinese.

Good shot! Seems you got a point there, so I better polish up my Putonghua/Mandarin and shock the hell out of those who doubt my Chinese proficiency.

Once I met two Russian girls on the street who were eager to go to a restaurant for dinner party. They asked, 'Can you speak English?' I said, 'Yes, and can you?' They smiled embarrassed and said, 'Yes, but only a few words.' I thought they were too humility, but finally I recognized they were definitely telling the truth. An interesting experience for me. Fortunately, I helped them in the end, haha~

Haha... good, sometimes we need to respond in a naughty way to have some fun. Much better than just answering "Yes".

Some people did gave their different response for the same question, "do you speak English?" and some answers were very funny. I think it is good for you to learn a little Chinese, since you live and work in China. Because not everyone in China can speack English.

Well, I speak excellent Guangdonghua which is only spoken in Guangdong and Hong Kong. It seems hard for me to learn Putonghua which is spoken everywhere in China. Must learn it.
