Two weeks ago, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil's second largest city, won the bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympics. All Brazilians cheered up for the wonderful moment. But yesterday's deadly shootout makes people all over the world doubt if Brazil could host a successful Olympics.
The bloody confrontation between drug traffickers and police led to 14 people dead, including two police officers. According to CNN, two drug gangs in Rio, Brazil, crossfired for territory in the city's slum and poor communities. When police rushed to crack down, they clashed violently with gang members. During the clash, a police helicopter was brought down by drug traffikers and two police officers in the helicopter died in the crash. Police killed two suspects and arrested the other four.
As we all know, security is high priority for the Olympic Games. The deadly violence in Rio draws great concerns from the IOC. Brazilian authorities said despite the city's crime, there is no reason for people to doubt Brazil's ability to host the Olympics.
