A total of $8,888,888 was donated to the Yale University by a Chinese businessman named Zhang Lei, who is successful in his career after graduating from Yale. He claimed it was Yale that changed his life. He sent the gift to the university as a return for its help.
The huge donation sparked debates on the Internet. Some criticised him ruthlessly, calling him "scum, trash, dog faeces", even "traitor". They hurled a question why Mr. Zhang didn't donate to the unversities in China, citing Zhang graduated from Renmin University before going abroad for further study. Others thought that he had the right to decide who he would like to donate, which means it is a personal business.
I think donation as philanthropy should be encouraged. Foreign companies also donated to help Chinese people in the fields of education, health, agriculture and so on, let alone part of Zhang's donation will go to help China-related programs and activities at the university.
