Huge Donation to Yale

811 views. 2010-1-20 15:25 |Individual Classification:Comment|

A total of $8,888,888 was donated to the Yale University by a Chinese businessman named Zhang Lei, who is successful in his career after graduating from Yale. He claimed it was Yale that changed his life. He sent the gift to the university as a return for its help.

The huge donation sparked debates on the Internet. Some criticised him ruthlessly, calling him "scum, trash, dog faeces", even "traitor". They hurled a question why Mr. Zhang didn't donate to the unversities in China, citing Zhang graduated from Renmin University before going abroad for further study. Others thought that he had the right to decide who he would like to donate, which means it is a personal business.

I think donation as philanthropy should be encouraged. Foreign companies also donated to help Chinese people in the fields of education, health, agriculture and so on, let alone part of Zhang's donation will go to help China-related programs and activities at the university.

Actually, I think it is kind of a personal choice and he definitely has the right to decide where he donate his money, cuz that is his money and one always do sth for a reason.

firstly, i didn't agree with him; and what's more he seemed a bit oriented-foreign, and forgot his root.

I don't think what he did should be unquestioningly conceded. After all chinese universities also need a lot of money to set up.

I don't think his donation should be censured. Chinese government also donated much money to African countries. That sum was much more than that Mr. Zhang's $8 million. What do you think of that?

What do you think of the huge donation of Chinese government to the African countries?

from the perspective of foreign policy, it could promote the friendship between African countries and China. it shows us friendly to some extent; maybe he who donated large amount of money to Yale university could stand for China, but it's different from that you speak of the donation of Chinese government to the African countries? yes?

I mean Chinese government should appropriate money to satisfy universities in China before donating to the African countries, according to your logic.  What do you think?

Hehe,my friend~Governmental donations have their special political motives. We ought not to compare that with this in simple way, unless this guy also has his own private intentions.
