Modern Technology

852 views. 2010-2-4 21:34 |Individual Classification:Meditation|

Can you imagine a situation where there is no advanced technology--no cellphones, no TV, no internet?  What will you do without them?  I am quiet sure that some people would be crazy.  But there is also a different voice in the world, claiming that modern technology is totally unnecessary.  They have their own reasons as follows.

Shakespeare didn't have Blackberry, and Aristotle was not with iPhone.  But they both lived a good life.  Christianism was spread across the world in an era in which there was no blog at all.  When Jesus preached the sermon on the mount, he, in the same way, did not employ the public address system, let alone Powerpoint.

So comes the conclusion--the modern technology which we have owned is unnecessary for our happy life.

However, as a generation living with modern technology, I don't think we can go back the previous life and still feel confortable.

I wouldn't mind going back before cell phones and computers.  But I wouldn't want to go back so far to before we had the printing press.  I can't afford hand-written books!

It's impossible for us to go back to the ancient life unless doomsday comes.

I could handle it.  In fact, I've done some of it.  I lived without TV for ten years (1973 to 1987).  I choose to live in a tent one summer (1986) for six months to get away from houses and technology.  Bear in mind that I was born in 1952.  I've lived several years with "running water" in the sense of "run and get it" because we had no faucets.

I would love to go to a rural village in China away from the cities and teach English.  But that's another story.

English hints:
>>Do you imagine the situation where there is no advanced technology
We would start with "Can you imagine a situation . . . "

>>no cell phones, no TV, no internet.
Sounds like my childhood was like when TV was still new and only black and white.  Cell phones and the internet did not exist.  In fact, I lived 40 years without the internet!  In the 1970s, the first hand held calculators came out.  A cheap one costs $600 which would be about $2500 today, US money.

>>What will you do without them?
I'd figure it out.

>> When Jesus sermoned on the mountain,
Better: When Jesus preached the sermon on the mount,

>>he, in the same way, did not employ the public address system, let alone Powerpoint.
I recently attended a scientific meeting.  One older professor gave a presentation without a computer or pictures.  He just stood and talked.  That's how we used to do it.  I think people hide behind their powerpoint slides.  The best presenters do not need powerpoint. But they are rare indeed.

Life without technology can be just as good as life with it.  Perhaps it can be better.  As I get older, I plan to abandon technology.  It is actually a goal of mine.  But first, I want to write several books and for that I plan to use computers!

If I was born in ancient times, it'll be OK for me. However I have enjoyed the modern technology, so it should be untolerable for me to lose it
