Journal of Chapter Nine, River Town

The danger of single story we have covered last class has been displayed in some attitudes that Chinese have. Peter observed several phenomenons that appeared in Fulin.

Peter was initially surprised when he noticed that most individuals in China have a positive attitude to Helter. At commence he considered that was an influence of Chairman Mao. They made contribution to the founding and develop of country as well as took mistakes which cause people in great trouble. But the truth is, a movie about Helter was popular in China during early day, which was why people thought Helter as interesting.

In this chapter Peter refer to the planned birth policy in China. His experience and conversation with local Chinese reflected various view on child birth between Chinese and westerners. Many Chinese, especially peasants, were willing to have as many children as possible even there was a serious fine.

Son is a must in traditional Chinese family while daughter is regarded as a child who do not belong to her parents but the husband’s family. Even in contemporary rural area in china, many families keep giving birth to child until there is a son complete the plan.

Journal of Chapter eleven, River Town

When reading this chapter, I feel a little sad, because I notice from the book that Peter is going to leave Fuling and the Teaching College. He travelled again the place where he had been to last year and recognized by the same people working there. He took the same way as he did last year, board the same ship as he had last time, and found every thing was familiar. He had contribution unconsciously a deep relationship with Fuling as well as every figure there.

Journal of Chapter twelve, River Town

In the last chapter, Peter had an unpleasant experience. When he was about to leave, he wanted to take some photos and to memorize this city, but what came out was a quarrel with local people. It seemed that what Peter love and what to settle in his mind was those people and peaceful town. However, what he admired was rejected roughly and finally made unhappiness.
