A Kidnap Case Connected With My Roommate

Two days ago, my roommate's families got a phone from the police which said that he was kidnapped in Hebei, and they were asked to pay money for getting him back safely. The police said the kidnapper had L's ID information.
But, he was in Xi'an with us. Isn't that sounds wired?
I think that dues to the Internet. We should pay attention to our personal information, do not leak it out. It could bring a lot of trouble.
