This is a composition of TOEFL in 2000. I’m also preparing for the test. When I see the topic, I really don’t know how to express my opinion- real one or deceptive one in the examination! However, I change the first one to share with you, my friend. Do you agree with my idea on the topic?

The topic:People attend college or university for many, different reasons (for example, new experiences, career preparation, increased knowledge). Why do you think people attend college or university? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

What do the Chinese students go to the college for?

Now I’m a graduate student in SUT. Although I have completed the study of university, I think that the question on “what do we go to the college for?” should confuse many students since maybe we never think of it.

However I think the main reason is not mainly related to what the requirement has mentioned such as new experience, career preparation, or increased knowledge and so on. To most students, being a college is the consequence caused by the traditional notion from their parents, teachers and nearly all the organizations of basic education including grade school, middle school and high school focus on cultivating the college students rather than the gracious character of human being through the high mark of the examination so that it creates a pathetic phenomenon- they study for study, for high score and for college in china!

Firstly, our parents and teachers told us that you must study hard in order to meet the excellent college entrance requirement, then you will find a good job and wife from the first day when we enter the school. In our parents thought, learning does prepare for the college! It’s the traditional view that deviate our practical purpose of study so that maybe we never think of the question- what’s the purpose of learning. On the contrary, we study for high mark.

Secondly, what our organizations of education have done in these years testify parents’ idea. They try their best to train us to become the machine for solving the questions in the exams so as to enter the famous university. At the same time, the school will earn the fame, praise, and money!

Last one, As the development of society and economy, the adjustment of some policy on college entrance examination, the thought of being a college student prevails the high school students in china.
