13th of June

I could hear my empty stomach’s songs when I left the office at 8:12 pm. Outside, it was covered with darkness and I could feel the gentle touch of the breeze.

Had no idea what the time was when I entered a store and bought some purple sweet potatoes; while I passed the stop of Overseas Chinese Hospital, I recognized the vendor selling papayas. Several days ago, I bought four papayas from him with 10 rmb. I was feeling good at that moment, thinking I was lucky to have such cheap price but big volume papayas. However, I was, er, a little angry when I saw him days later, finding the board placed in front of his stand saying “3 papayas only with 5 Rmb”. But today, I saw him for the third time and the board read “3 papayas with only 5 RMB”. I quickened my steps and stood in front of the stand next minute. The vendor, a middle-aged man, stopped talking with a woman sitting beside him and got to his feet. He reached out a plastic bag for me, saying:”Sweet papayas. This side, 5 yuan 3 papayas; this side 5 yuan 2 papayas”. I looked at the papayas as he pointed. Then, I became to understand why the papayas could be sold in such a price: they are over-matured.

“Sorry. I will come back and buy the papayas next time.” Before he digested my words, I rushed off.

Then, back to the house, say “Tadaima” to Wenmei and Wenmei responded “Okaelinasai”.  Then, cleaned the purple sweet potatoes; cleaned the papayas in my storage; took a bath; did the washing—I was singing while taking the shower. “It’s nice to see someone who can still sing to himself after he begins earn his own bread.” I can’t remember whose words they are, but I like them. And then, I realized suddenly that I made two mistakes with my job this afternoon.  First, without making clear of the background of the Australian client, I read the clients’ requirements to Mr. Ho directly. Second, I forget to add Mr. Ho’s words at the end of the letter to another Australian client…..南摩阿弥陀佛…..

Then, got out of the washing room, read some materials and some cases, and then turned on the laptop. It’s 22:16 already.

I am a little afraid. Afraid I will forget the passion for diary-writing in such busy and exhausted working days; afraid the moment when I opened the file under “June”, I can find less and less diaries; afraid that I will not be able to answer “What you have done today? This week? This month? This period?” I have to write…

We have a new colleague today, his name is Tommy. A little shy and talk little. Did I look the same like him when I worked for the first day? I wonder.
