Going on exchange

711 views. 2010-9-9 17:48

“Morning, China.”

So I found myself snugly nestling down in an armchair in school’s library with bleary eyes barely opened, inputting English morning greetings to my friends on RenRen at 8:00 am over Sydney, which effectively was 6:00am in China.

Wee hours may not be the favourite of most people, but are indeed the happiest time of a day for me. Few dudes pop up and bother you with ceaseless lines on QQ, no more disturbing noises from outside of the house, a restful period of time for me to catch up with the deadline of a paper, or an assignment. In Sydney, Morning is just meaningless but snores. Sounds a bit dodgy, but I swear with my next paper in FINA2001, the life style does keep me staying on track.

My application for exchange program has been undergoing a rough time. A congratulation letter was sent to me in the early semester, indicating that I was nominated to Singapore on exchange for next year. While leaving Sydney U for a year was considered absolutely irrational and absurd, or even brainless by my peers, I turned down the nomination politely not because of that, but for I really meant to go HK and hang out with my closest friends in the closest spot. And what really irked me was that vacations arranged by Singapore U would in a sense be conflictive with what they have in China. That’s why I bailed out at the first place, or at least, I thought I did.

Feeling somewhat shocked by the unexpected result (I put HK as my first preference), I consulted the coordinator in charge of the program and the response was that, taking greater good into consideration, they wouldn’t permit students to go on exchange for year-long period even with qualified academic results like mine. But also within the response, he would like to renominate me to HK for half a year as a compromise if I want. After a long enough conversation with Wind and Timmy, I eventually signed the acceptance of the new nomination.

Ergo, here came the research of my partner uni-HST. The job was not difficult. It’s actually intriguing as it went. The internet bombarded me with tons of posts and threads talking about applying the uni, along with numerous entries focusing on UST exchange life made by students from Tsinghua U and Peking U and other leading Us in China who has been on an exchange before. Apart from that, I was also overwhelmed by some astonishing facts about HST. Well, to make it short, The University is really richhhhhh! It was founded in 1991 with 40 billions HKD. “It’s made of pure gold”, say the students studying there. With an all-stars cast of great lecturers holding a PHD from top 10 unis in the USA, HST has been growing rapidly since its foundation. Aside from the accomplishments achieved in the research field of all kinds, the MBA program has been ranked at No.1 in Asia while its EMBA has been ranked at top 9 in the world. The Uni is soooooo rich that Warren Buffet is invited to be a visiting professor in the uni. I am definitely thrilled and can’t wait to experience a hectic semester in there.

Oh, to those who may actually concern, I am now officially facilitating as an oral English teacher on the internet as for a part time job. The business has been going pretty well, with a dirt-cheap price of 30rmb per hour (Don’t mock me…You don’t know what is like to compete in China!), Many students from all levels and all age groups resorted to me on improving their speaking ability. Hopefully, with petty money accumulating, I will be able to fulfill the travel fund for me and my friends by this winter. I vow to be a poor uni student no longer!

I miss you, China.

I miss you too, Sydney.
