So, ya, I like positive happy songs. I'm a pretty happy guy now. But when I was about the age of 15-17, I was a very depressed little boy. It's ok, I think we all go through this phase during this period of our lives, at least in America. We are just starting to learn true life lessons, like love and hurt. We are starting to feel as if we are truly single human beings, no longer belonging to our parents. We form our own feelings and ideas. I'm glad I went through this phase, it has made me the person I am today. During this time of my adolescents, my mother forced Christianity on me. I wanted nothing of it but I wasn't old enough to put up too much of a fight. But mentally, I never accept what was being told to me. I was in a different place.
Today, I came across a song that I must have listened to a million times between the ages of 15 and 17. It's by an Industrial Rock band called Nine Inch Nails or NIN. I remember copying the lyrics of this song into the cover of my bible. It's a very sad and depressing song. So, please be careful.
The clip I'm sharing is from a live music concert by NIN. The lead singer, Trent Reznor is amazing live! One of the best live bands I've ever seen.

My favorite part of the video is around 4:15, the bird and fish, amazing.
Band: Nine Inch Nails
Song: Hurt
I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
the only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
the old familiar sting
try to kill it all away
but I remember everything
What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
goes away in the end
You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
I wear this crown of shit
Upon my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stains of time
the feelings disappears
You are someone else
I am still right here
What have I become?
my sweetest friend
Everyone I know
goes away in the end
You could have it all
my empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
If I could start again
a million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way...
There is also a cover* of this song done by the country music godfather, Johnny Cash. He is very important to the history of Country Music and he recorded this cover just before he died. The song takes on a different feeling in his video. It's very personal and always gets my eyes wet.
*(a cover is when a musician/band copies the song of another musician/band.)
Singer: Johnny Cash
Song: Hurt - written by Trent Reznor
Same words but Cash changes the word shit to thorns, a reference to the crown Jesus wore when he died.
