I love to say "Edible does not mean delicious!"  Yes, if the bread does not rise, you can still eat it.  But you have to have fresh yeast and you have to mix it in a way that you don't kill the yeast.  Several factors are important: 1) is the yeast fresh and alive?  2) did you use the right temperature water when you added it to the yeast?  3) was the kitchen too hot or cold?  Yeast bread will not rise correctly in a cold room and may rise too fast in a hot room.  4) did you knead the bread long enough?  This is often the problem if the bread is not kneaded properly.  5) Did you add the right amount of sugar?  Without sugar, the yeast will not multiply fast enough.  Etc.

Don't worry about it.  Almost everyone fails the first time they back bread.  It is a good experience.  In life, we often fail at things we first attempt.  It teaches us that success is not always easy, and a husband or wife who can make good bread is worth marrying!  HA!  That way, you don't have to learn.  You can let you spouse make the bread!  Division of labor is good!

That is very possible.  You should buy light sifted flour.  When I made bread weekly I could often make bread with flour straight from the bag.  But often, if I have not made bread for a long time, I will put the flour through a sifter and sift the flour.  This adds air to the flour and makes it more likely the bread will rise and be light and fluffy.  It is part of the art of making bread.  I'd suggest you make bread five or ten times.  As you practice, you will learn.  You will be very proud of your skills and by that time will make very good bread.  Perhaps you'll decide to make  your bread at home instead of buying it in the store!  pH

I agree!  When I was a boy, I baked six at a time.  But I also had four brothers and four sisters!  That was enough!
