- sayuri: The telephone is a decoration or available phone.That telephone has been on the wall since the 1950s and until this month it still worked. But we were paying $35 a month to keep it and we also have cell phones. So we decided to save that money and we had it disconnected. So, yes, now it is just a decoration! I did the math! $35 time 12 months is about $400 a year. I was not prepared to pay $4000 over the next ten years just to keep the decoration in working order!

Our cell phones are more expensive. We have three phones for $95 a month: mine, Sheila's, and a cousin's all on one bill.

It takes practice. 30 years ago I made bread once or twice a week and could make great bread every time. Now I need to learn how to make bread all over again!

We study many things in school that we may never use in life. So, why go to college. Here's my opinion.
College is NOT designed to teach you anything. Most people think they get a degree in business or science or education. I think most of those degrees and the courses one studies are useless. BUT I also believe high school and college is extremely important for two reasons totally unrelated to a particular field of study.
Second (in importance), a college is extremely likely to give you work you enjoy and a higher income. For example, I was working in the car repair area at Walmart. I hate doing car repairs. BUT they quickly moved me to the garden center. Why? I have a college degree in botany. So, my college work has allowed me to do work that I enjoy. For several years I made about $70,000 a year. Why? Because I had a college degree. So, if you want to increase your income and enjoy your life, study what you enjoy in college.
First (in importance, but not in sequence), the primary purpose of college is NOT an education, but it teaches you how to deal with a wide variety of people. That's the REAL purpose in college. I don't care that a person has a degree. I want to know "Can you put up with the garbage taught by and give to you by a wide variety of professors for four years? Are you willing to stick with it and learn how to deal with people?" If you can survive four years of other peoples (especially professors) stupidity in college, then I am much more willing to hire you in my business. If you can do that, then you can put up with my own stupidity! THAT, my friend, is why we study in college. It is not that you know the basics of making bread. You are willing to make bread because someone else said "this needs to be done." That's what makes you a better employee.
If you want to learn something useful, I'm afraid you will have to teach yourself!
