Mysterious, from 美国’s shore, China rises across the sea.
And 美国人may never know what 中国人so soon will be.
What was your past? Where are you from? Who are you now? Who will you be?
Mysterious, you are to us, who cannot see, who cannot be.
We know so few, we know not much, of who you are or who you be.
Our leaders claim we are the best, yet most of us the truth can see.
Some 美国人can blind themselves and hide their heads and think they’re free.
But with bound feet we stumble on, not knowing who we want to be.
You have a past and we have none, you own a mix of unity.
We just divide ourselves and hide, refuse to face reality.
Three thousand years China has grown, unfolding then calamity,
Then grown again, expand and rise, treasure the past, yet somehow free.
2004 has come and gone, I mark the day I came to see,
To learn myself of who you are and who you come to want to be.
You want to build, you want to feel, you want to live in harmony,
In ways that we think are surreal, we 美国人 who dare to see.
One thing I’ve learned, one thing I know, I’ve learned from you, you’ve learned from me.
We are the same, we 中美人, who want to live in peace with thee.
The more I learn of 中国人, the more of my own self I see.
We are the same, my friend you see, we want, we love, we live, we be.
So let’s be friends, my 中国 friend, we want the same from like you see.
A house, a home, a spouse, a child, we all want life and want it free.
So, 中国人, we journey on, on this small planet built for we.
Let’s make our world into one, break down the fence, we’ll all be free.
