Dreams, Tsunamis, and Christians

Hot 3501 views. 2013-4-28 16:01 | Dreams

I had an interesting dream just now.  It is 02:35 a.m. in Arkansas, although I'm in North Carolina.

In the first part of the dream I was taking a college course in American literature.  As has happened lately in my dreams related to college, it was near the end of the semester and I had not paid attention or attended most of the class meetings.  I was depending on my limited knowledge of literature to remember the topic of the class as we studied during the class for the test.  I always hated not being ready for tests in college, so naturally I dream about not being ready.

Then the dream moved to a completely new location.  I say "completely new" because some of my dreams are repetitive, some have recurring themes, and some are completely new.  I was swimming in a lake next to some type of new boat.  The boat was more like a tractor, but made of inflated rubber so it would float.  Yes, I  know that makes no sense, but, hey, it is a dream, not reality.  I was swimming in the pond directing the person on the boat on how to drive the boat.  It was a "one person" boat, so I had to be in the water to give directions.

Suddenly, a tsunami formed in the lake.  Since we were in the water, we could not feel the earthquake that formed the tsunami, but a wall of water formed and raced toward us.  I managed to move to the lake shore but the water still rose to nearly head height where it hit a chain link fence behind me.  Strangely, the water did not flow through the holes in the chain link fence, but flowed downstream sweeping away about five people who were standing downstream and next to the hotel where the college class was being held.  I did not say all this made sense!  It is, after all, a dream.

Some people at the hotel suddenly started talking about how they had survived because they were Christians.  I found this very funny and ironic.  Christians are that way.  If they barely escape death, they immediately will say things like, "God was protecting us."  If other Christians are killed, they will say, "God works in mysterious ways."  If the Christians are only injured, then "God must be testing their faith to make them stronger Christians."  If non-Christians are injured, then "God is trying to get their attention."  Nothing is ever a random accident for Christians, because "God knows everything and will only let us be tested in ways in which he helps us pass the test of our faith."  What problem do I have with that?  I think sometimes things happen randomly and no god is involved.  Sorry guys (Christians), I don't buy it.

About that time, a second tsunami began to form.  But the first earthquake had, literally, thrown all the water out of the lake.  The lake was empty and covered by a light brown mud.  Yes, I do dream in color these days.  I used to dream in black and white, but with improved technology I now dream in color.  Some people only dream in black and white.  What about you?  Do you dream in color?

Vocabulary and idioms:

Chain link fence: a type of fence made of long strands of hard, stiff, 1/8 inch (4mm) diameter wire creating a mesh with 2 inch (5 cm) holes in the wire, capable of holding dogs, animals, and even people if it is tall enough.

I don't buy it: I don't believe or accept the idea.

Pond: a small lake, usually with a dam, and usually on a farm.  In southern Texas a pond is called a tank.

Recurring dream: a recurring dream is one which occurs repeatedly.  A recurring theme in a dream is a concept (being in college and unprepared for tests) which repeats even though the details are not exactly the same.  Most of my recurring dreams are of the second type, with recurring themes, such as being in college but unprepared for tests, being able to fly by flapping my arms or simply flying like Superman, etc.

Semester: 14 weeks of a college course.  Some colleges are on the "quarter" system rather than the semester system and a "quarter" of a college year lasts 9 weeks and not 14 like a semester.

Tractor: a large piece of farm machinery made for tilling (digging) or plowing the ground.

Wall of water: any large and unexpected wave of water.

when I was a child, my dreams are full of imagination and more colorful, but now, most of my dreams are related to the things happened in the daytime. probably our dreams change as we grow older.
