Slip-sliding away

Hot 3616 views. 2014-1-10 13:58

Yesterday, I wrote about weather.  Today, I experienced it! I stepped outside, slipped on the ice at the top of two stairs, landed on my rear end, bounced my back on the stairs a few times and came to a painful halt.  After accessing my injuries and the situation, I decided to go back in the house, no easy task.  My wife was still asleep, it was cold and I was injured.  Laying in place was not an option although I might have called for help from any neighbors who probably would not have heard me anyway.  The closest neighbors were gone to work and others were too far away to hear from inside their homes nearby.  I didn't want to disturb my wife too much, like knocking on the door and having her find me in pain on my hand and knees.  So, I climbed, crawled, scrambled, but didn't stand up and walk up two more stairs to open the door.  I crawled inside, managed to close the door and roll onto the couch before I awakened here.  We discussed calling an ambulance, but she is a nurse, accessed my injuries as I managed to walk to bed with her assistance, and laid down.  Since I have had pain problems in my neck for the last two years (age related bone spurs, bulging disks, and such) I have the same pain medication I would get at the hospital on hand at home.  The pain was unrelated to bone, but was mainly in muscle and since I could walk (a dangerous thing to try with an injured back) we knew I probably had not broken any bones.  A trip to the hospital on ice covered roads would have required us to call the ambulance and almost certainly $1,000 in expenses despite the fact I have the same insurance options and costs members of the US Congress have since I am a retired federal (national) employee.  I can barely walk and move but I should be good as new in a few days.

I'm surviving.  I did a little better today, but it is still hard to get in and out of bed, roll over, or twist and turn.  Fortunately, I can walk fairly easily even if it is gingerly.

That is why I always keep my cellphone close to me and it has already got me out of trouble several times. Once for being trapped in a lift and another time, a car breakdown on a rural road, lost while walking through the woods etc., However, in some remote places, a cellphone is not of much use due to   unavailable cellphone signals. I guess you may be have signal problems at your place too. Nevertheless, you should still carry some sort of emergency electronic devices with you. You are not 26 anymore, you know.

I am surprised that it costs so much for emergency medical assistance. I consider myself fortunate that in my city, I only need to call 911/999 and an ambulance would arrive (costs US$20) and rush me to a well equipped hospital. A hospital stay would cost US$25 a day all inclusive. The reason why the costs are so low is because medical care is subvented by our government and we don't need any insurance. The reason why our government can afford to subvent medical costs is because we don't spend our tax money on war and expensive government expenses. The doctors are paid a good fixed salary and don't need to milk the medical insurance system. I have no desire to criticize your medical system but facts are facts. Come and see for yourself if you have any doubts.

Take care buddy, there may not always be someone there to pull you out everytime.

I totally agree with you.  Americans pay twice as much for health care per person than any other country, but 25% of our people have no health insurance.  Large parts of the government are determined to keep it that way.  We have high rates of infant mortality, etc.  The medical system is rigged against the average person and is totally corrupt and unfair.  That's my opinion!
