Travel or trip

Hot 3655 views. 2015-5-30 04:14 | Travel

On another website, a Chinese person asked how to use the words travel and trip.  Here's a unique response for Dioenglish folks.

Travel - verb; trip - noun or verb, but when thinking of traveling, a trip is a noun.  Examples:

I plan to take a trip and travel to China next year.  I postponed my trip because I'm not ready to spend the money, so we plan to travel next year.  I hope I don't get tripped up and am not able to take the trip.  You can also trip on a log or rock.  So, we might say we take a trip, go on a journey, or go traveling and sightseeing.  However, we don't say we are taking a travel unless we are using Chinglish.  Taking a travel is perfect Chinglish, but we don't use it in English.

Oh seems you got it right. Lets say I am taking a trip from Beijing to Shanghai for the summer holidays and when I return, I would travel to Brazil for business.
Travel – to go from one place to another, normally one country to another
Trip – a journey that is often for a short period of time.

To some extent, that is correct.  However, there's still the subject/verb issue. If I travel, I'm "verbing" (action).  If I take a trip, I'm using a noun (person, place, or thing).  I don't "trip" to Beijing (unless it is all in my head and I'm taking illegal-mind-altering drugs) and I don't take a travel to Brazil.  Note that in Sunnyv's sentence "a trip" is a noun and "travel to Brazil" uses a verb.  I could just as easily travel (verb) across town or take a trip (noun) to Brazil.  If I go traveling, I'm verbing.  If I take a trip, I'm back to nouns again.
