America's Revolution

Hot 3849 views. 2016-3-28 16:28

The United States is about to undergo a revolution that will make the French Revolution or the Cultural Revolution seem like a tea party.  Indeed, we have a "Tea Party" as a semi-political party!  Why do I say that?  I've been studying China and Chinese history.  The people of the US are ready for a change, as evidenced by the failure of both political parties to put forward viable presidential candidates.  We have candidates ready to carpet bomb foreign countries and citizens who don't believe in climate science.  Even worse, we have presidential candidates who deny scientific facts and a congress owned by corporations.  When the current politicians can no longer control the economy, something will break.  The people will want heads to roll for failing to "protect" us from ourselves.  Each new group of leaders is becoming more extreme.  Most of the world sees the US as the greatest threat to global stability.

However, it will not be politics that starts this revolution.  It will be biology.  As we exceed the ability of earth to feed and clothe us, the current system will fall and the US will lead in the fall.  We seem to think we can keep demanding more from an environment that can no longer provide for everyone.  If we start demanding more food from other countries because our crops of failed, we will be taking food from starving people.  How can our crops fail?  California is already dry.  The Great Plains are getting hotter and drier as well.  As temperatures increase, we can produce fewer crops.  Ten years ago, an official Canadian government website predicted that by 2100, the climate here in northern Arkansas will move north into southern Canada, based solely on temperature.  If you heat up the central US it will dry out faster.  It was only about four years ago that the US corn crop nearly failed completely, for example.  It does not take much crop failure to bring on starvation.

As I've said before, biological systems seem to do fine until the food runs out.  Then, food cannot be found for anyone.  The best example comes from the fruit flies I once raised for use in biology labs.  I put mashed banana into a small vial and a few fruit flies.  In a week, the fruit flies had produced larvae that started to feed on the banana.  I added water occasionally and soon the population grew.  A second or third generation of flies were hatched.  Soon, the banana was filled with larvae and the bottle seemed full of flies. Then, if left to themselves, all the flies would be found dead.  The food had been consumed and they had starved.  I normally started a new crop in a new vial with new banana.  But any colony left unattended and only watered soon died.

People are like that.  Our vial is the planet earth.  If we keep consuming at unsustainable rates, we will have consumed all available food.  Then all the flies die in the vial, earth.  Unlike my lab, we don't have any other bananas to add to earth once we eat them all.  Maybe some time I will talk about the various problems, warming climate, already overfished seas, soil erosion, harvested forests.  As I have said before, it takes 10 acres of land to support one person.  Why?  Only 5% of that ten acres for each person on earth can be used for crops.  The rest is tundra, desert, mountaintops, or Antarctica, etc.  You can't grow wheat in the Sahara or in a dry valley in central California.  The problem?  We only have 6 acres per person now, not enough for each human.

There are so many climate problems. And they are becoming worse and worse at a terrible rate. From my perspective, we should try our best to protect our environment while developing the economy. I have the similar experience in my life. There is a dye plant in my town since I was very young. And it produces enormous pollution which are either poured into the river or vented to the atmosphere. And recently there are many people who have got cancer in our town. I don't know whether this is the main reason of the cancer. But it must be one of reasons. I just hope our planet will become better.

Indeed the United States need a revolution. The country was founded on freedom and equality. Unfortunately, things have changed so much. The people of American and the Presidents have lost their sense of direction. It is hard to understand how people of such high intelligence can vote for such a short sighted presidential candidate like Donald Trump? The US would sink if he becomes president. Ted Cruz is a reasonable candidate. The US have frightening tax policies which scares away all foreign investors. There is even reverse immigration and people are heading back to Mexico.

The US does not to feel worried about China. China just don't have the natural resources to overtake the US. China's rise is due to investments and imports by the US. The policies of America makes it hard for people to invest in the US so the manufacturing jobs are all going to China, Vietnam, Cambodia and India etc.

We sometimes wonder why some countries are rich while others are poor. The difference lies in the availability of natural resources. The US have plenty of natural resources and can survive on itself. The rich and fertile farmlands alone supplies sufficient food for America and leaves plenty of surplus for exports to earn valuable foreign exchange for the development of the country.   It is painful to see the farm owners resorting to make the most out of the land by using massive machinery to farm and harvest the fields. The result is that the land is overused and abused.

Scientists are not eager to find new sources of energy because there are plentiful supply of fossil fuel from the middle east. To control the supply of oil, the US have gone to war with Iraq and other countries leaving a mess for the world to clean up.

One in many developing countries consumes less than in developed ones.
Do you agree?

Certainly.  In 1970, the US had 5% of the earth's people and consumed 25% of the earth's resources.  We still say that if everyone consumed as much as Americans, we would need 4.5 planets of resources.

I agree.  I have always called the battles in Iraq "The First of the Great Resource Wars."  This is continuing to play out as various parties try to control various parts of the Middle East.

Countries would not act until it is too late. The politicians are ignoring the environmental problems and unnecessarily abusing farmlands and stressing agriculture to it's limits. Priority is given to economics and GDP seems more important than anything else. The US is not playing a leading role in combating pollution and is slow to reduce the use of fossil fuel. China also gave priority to industry but is now acting on protecting the environment because of the alarming pollution effects seen in Beijing. Beijing is considered to be a hardship city for consular officials and are entitled to extra pay for being stationed there. There are also large tracts of farmland in China polluted by industrial wastes and it is very difficult to restore those land to agricultural production. There is nothing on this planet that lasts forever and someday, we would have to pay the price for wastage and neglect.

Interesting.  Almost every day I edit scientific research papers out of China, usually 2-4 each week.  It is very satisfying at this point in my career (age 64 almost) to be helping China improve the living conditions for its people (while US politicians are making things worse here in general).
