What is the difference between the photosphere and the chromosphere?

The photosphere is the thin, opaque surface layer of the Sun that raidates most of the Sun's energy. It has a temperatur of about 5,800k.
The chromosphere is the lower level of the solar atmosphere, lying between the photosphere and the uppermost leve, the corona. It is the thin layer of relatively tranparent gases and is best observed during a total eclipse of the Sun, when it glows pink.
