In the 1960s, the United States went through a series of social movements, such as anti-war movements and civil right movements. In 1966, the National Organization for Women (NOW) was formed and after a long history of women working for equal rights, the women’s movements began.  

    The women’s movement in the 1960s was started by three groups of women, a group of professional women who were appointed to a Commission on the Status of Women by President Kennedy, white housewives and mothers who read Betty Friedan’s book, and young activists in the civil rights and anti-war movements. They asked not only for equal pay for work, but also equal opportunity for jobs in fields such as science and technology, management. And they wanted changes in social practices and attitudes which would acknowledge women were not inferior to men.

    This movement did not get support from women all around the world but also from men who have enlightened attitudes. We have gone through a lot of changes concerning the social status of women. We can see that today female lead a more equal life due to the women’s movement. Indeed, there is a radical change in society, but we have to admit there are still a lot of inequalities in some aspects, for example the job hunting and domestic violence. Our society needs to go through more changes. The gender discrimination has to be eliminated if we want to build a fair world.
