I have just finished 1984. While reading it, I felt too frightened and scared to recall some details. This book is named 1984, but George Orwell wrote it in 1949. However, readers can see the shadow of the society become our present society. So you can see how great and wonderful the author is. And that is why people is lost in reading his works. He is a genius in my mind and I even have no idea to express what I am thinking now.
There is a negative utopia --- an imaginary world that has some similarities to our present society. And this is still a political novel.
At the beginning, I think Winston lived in a totalitarian society ruled by Big Brother. He was totally different from most of the people and he had the past memory and knowledge. But the place where he was living was supervised by the telescreen. He was clear that the place he lived in was very horrible and dark. In his heart, he thought he would live in a place where there was no darkness and his faith brought us hope as well. So I believe that readers like me are full of hope at that time, convincing Winston will live in a bright future.
When he is arrested by the organization, he doesn’t give up his faith and strongly insists on what he knows. The totalitarian society would rather not give up and kill him but chose to brainwash him and let him know that two and two are five instead of four. Winston had a strong will and knew what was really true so that he repudiated the forgery. The organization just made him know who could control the past could control the present. Because of the power, they could tamper with the history and create their own history.
Even though Winston knew living in such a society was ludicrous and disquieting, he seemed not to get rid of the environment. At last, he definitely admitted that two and two are five and accepted they would control life and people by being badly tortured and tormented. In their eyes, people are like automations and slavery is freedom.
As we know, Winston used to be a strong man who considered some spirit and some principle would defeat them. Having seen the process of brainwash Winston, everyone feels horrible and is unable to read the words. So he believed he loved Big Brother.
For me, this novel seems to be a thrilling story. The power can really change black into white and force you to believe and accept it. I think I will see it a second time, in any rate.
